ROUND 1

THBT Trade unionism has been largely corrupted by the ruling class
and is no longer a viable structure for socialist organization

CLOSING SPEECH

“Corruption within trade unions is a cancer that must be rooted out

to preserve the integrity of the labor movement”. I, Inas Izhar, stand
before you today to conclude the dispute on corrupted trade unions
being a socialist organization.

By the arguments taken up in today’s debate, we strongly believe

that because of corruption, trade unions are no longer socialist. The
trade unions have a lot of significance in the modern world. Without
trade unions, the workers would not be able to argue for anything
against the employer. There would be no laws governing the
maximum working hours, no sick pay and no better wages. Trade
unions cannot be neglected with the amount of benefits they give to
the workers. But these trade unions ARE NOT SOCIALIST. These
trade unions which are created to protect the rights and interests of
the workers are largely undermined due to corruption by the ruling
class. Moreover, this dependence on some external force like
political parties and business owners has led to the loss of trust and
unity among the members. This corruption has silenced the voice
and interests of many members within this union.

Some trade unions are a part of the private ownership meanwhile

socialism as an idea is completely against private ownership. So, how
can trade unions be socialist? Trade unions do support ideas like
solidarity and independence but because of this ruling class, the idea
of solidarity has been corroded. Trade unions which were made for
the benefits of the workers are now largely benefiting people of the
ruling class. Therefore it is clear that, Corrupted trade unions
nowhere near resemble a socialist structure. As long as this
corruption is removed, trade unions can never be socialist.
