This letter urges a senator to support the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act (H.R. 3108), which would expand Medicare coverage of medical nutrition therapy to include treatment for additional chronic conditions. Obesity and related diseases are major risk factors for severe COVID-19 outcomes. Medical nutrition therapy is an effective and cost-saving treatment component, but Medicare currently only covers it for diabetes and kidney disease. The legislation would give more seniors access to this important care.

Dear Senator Doe:
As your constituent from the state of [state name fully spelled out], I urge you to support the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act (H.R. 3108) introduced by Representatives Robin Kelly and Fred Upton. This legislation would expand coverage of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) in Medicare Part B to include for a range of chronic conditions, many of which are contributing to COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. Recent research shows that obesity is the second greatest risk factor, after older age, for hospitalization among COVID-19 patients, and the CDC lists obesity, diabetes and heart disease among the conditions that put people at greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19. The situation is particularly dire for minority populations that have long faced chronic disease health disparities due to socioeconomic inequalities and reduced access to health care, healthful foods and safe places to be active. MNT is a cost-effective component of treatment for chronic conditions that are contributing to poor COVID-19 outcomes. Despite the potential benefits, Medicare only covers outpatient MNT for patients with diabetes or kidney disease, leaving many seniors without access to care. The Medical Nutrition Therapy Act would give Medicare beneficiaries access to the care they need by providing coverage in Medicare Part B for MNT for people with prediabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, malnutrition, eating disorders, cancer, gastrointestinal diseases including celiac disease, HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease and unintentional weight loss. Please show your support by cosponsoring the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act! To become a cosponsor, contact: Rep. Robin Kelly's office: Anita Burgos (anita.burgos@mail.house.gov) Rep. Fred Upton's office: Mark Ratner (mark.ratner@mail.house.gov) Thank you for your time and considering my request.
