ECS 303 - Lesson Plan #1

Subject/Grade: Science 5/6 Lesson Title: States of Matter Teacher: Maria Rigetti

Stage 1: Identify Desired Results

Established Goals: (Learning outcome/s & indicator/s from curriculum)

Outcome:

MC5.1 Investigate the characteristics and physical properties of materials in solid, liquid, and gaseous states
of matter.

Indicators:

a) Recognize that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

b) Classify materials in their environment as solids, liquids, or gases based on personal observation.

g) Determine the distinguishing characteristics which enable scientists to differentiate between solids, liquids,
and gases.

Understandings: (can also be written as ‘I Can’ statements) Essential Questions:

Students will understand…
What is matter?
How to tell what state an object is in. What is matter made of?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. What are the 3 different states
The differences between each state of matter. of matter?
What characteristics define a
state of matter?
Can objects change states?

Students will know… Students will be able to…

What the 3 states of matter are. Recognize what matter is.

Characteristics of each state. Classify objects by their state.
What matter is. Describe characteristics of each state.

Stage 2: Determine Evidence for Assessing Learning

Evidence of learning:
- students are able to tell what state of matter on object is
- they will be able to explain why they made that choice (what characteristics the object has that led
them to believe that)
- Assessed through worksheet

Stage 3: Build Learning Plan

Instructional Strategies:

Brainstorming, questioning, note-taking.

Set (Engagement): Length of Time: 3 minutes. Materials/Resources:

Brainstorming:

Stage 4: Reflection

Professional Development Goal is…

This is my first lesson so I want to increase student engagement by learning their names and getting to know
them in order to provide relevant information and examples.
