    Strokes

    Usually a Chinese character is formed by radicals (parts), and radicals are

    formed by strokes. The most basic strokes are shown below:

    Diǎn, 点 "Dot" Tiny dash, speck

    Héng, 横 "Horizontal" Rightward stroke

    Shù, 竖 "Vertical" Downward stroke

    Flick up and
    Tí, 提 "Rise"

    Falling rightwards
    Nà, 捺 "Press down" (fattening at the
    bottom)

    Falling leftwards
    Piě, 撇 "Throw away"
    (with slight curve)
    Appended to other
    strokes, suddenly
    Gōu, 钩 "Hook"
    going down or
    going left only.

    A tapering thinning
    curve, usually
    Wān, 弯 "Bend" concave left
    (convex outward
    right).

    Curved line, usually


    concave right
    Xié, 斜 "Slant"
    (convex outward
    left).

    Indicates change in
    stroke direction,
    Zhé, 折 "Break" usually 90° turn,
    going down or going
    right only.
