Options

BIG IDEAS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

What is work?

What is force?

What do work and force mean in scientific form?

In science, work means using force to move or hold an object.

ELIGIBLE CONTENT:

OBJECTIVE(S) (Be sure to include all four parts: A (audience) B (behavior) C (condition) D (degree)):

Students will understand the relationship between work and force; and, understand that in science work means
using a force to move or hold an object. Students will understand the concept of work and force with little or no
error.

MATERIALS:

Promethean
Computer
TPT slides lesson
u tube video for 3rd grade about workand force
Work and Force Presentation
Forces Make Things Move Book recording
Balls

ACTIVITIES (There are three sections here):

Lesson Section Teacher Procedures Student Responsibilities

OPENING (Introduction, purpose, hook)

Opening 8 Minutes/ Anticipatory Set

1. Cue students to get ready Teacher introduces the topic of Students listen to the introduction
to learn/ transition into work and force. What is the and respond to questions.
lesson. Introduction. relationship between work and
force? In science work means
using force to move or hold an
object.

2. Play Forces Make Things Teacher plays the video on the Students watch the video.
Move. promethean.

BODY (Bulleted step by step/differentiation must be included)

Body 20 Minutes

1. Show lesson 1 slides. Teacher displays the slides on the Students watch the slide
promethean, and reads each one to presentation.
the students.

2. Demonstration. Teacher demonstrates how Students respond with answers.

different magnitudes of force are
needed to move different objects.
Lift a light object: Ask How much
energy was used to lift this object?
Lift a heavy object: Ask How
much energy was used to lift this
object? Why was more energy
needed?

3. Activity. Types of Teacher tells students they will use Students participate in the activity.
Movement. balls on their desks to demonstrate
different types of movement and
directions. Roll, bounce, spin,
push, throw, drop, swing, pull, lift,
are movements. Up, down, left,
right, forward, backward,
sideways, are directions. Great
force, more/ less force, increase/
decrease, little force, are
magnitude/ amount of force.

CLOSURE (Wrap up and brief summary): How will you plan to restate the lesson objective?
Closure 2 Minutes

1. Wrap up lesson. Teacher asks: How did the Students reply with various
magnitude of force impact the answers.
ball? What changed? Could you
do all these movements with an
egg? Could you do all these
movements with a bowling ball?
Which movements were
challenging?

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:

Students will be provided accommodations and modifications based on individual needs. Any differentiation of
instruction will be included.Differentiation may include reading, interpretation, and direction with materials
being used for the lesson. All IEP information will be followed accordingly.

ASSESSMENT: (How you will determine that student has mastered objectives?): Consider formative and
summative assessment measures for all levels of differentiation.

Formative assessment. Class participation observation. Summative assessment will occur at the end of the unit
on simple machines.

SELF-ASSESSMENT/REFLECTION: (Complete this section if you have taught this lesson to peers or in
clinical placement):

It is hard to get students into some science lessons. Hands on activities make the lessons more exciting.
