2. The mineral hawleyite. One form of CdS, crystallizer in one of the cubic lattices with edge length 5.87A. The
density of hawleytite is 4.63 g cm3.
(i) In which lattice does hawleyite crystallize?
(ii) Find the schottky defect in gm cm3

3. If all the atoms touching one face plane are removed in solid A+B having rock salt type structure, then
calculate the formula of the compound and the defect brought by this removal.

4. 100 ml 0.2 M NiCl2 is treated with 100 ml 0.3 M dimethyl glyoxime then the mass of ppt (gm) formed will be

5. A yellow solid (A) is insoluble in water. It dissolves slowly in hot concentrated HNO3 and a brown gas is
evolved. Solid (A) gets dissolved in boiling Na2SO3 solution to form a clear solution (B). On acidification of this
solution of (B), a colourless gas (C) with burning sulphur smell comes out along with white turbidity due to the
formation of D. Which of the following statement/s is/are correct?
(A) A and D may be similar compound (B) B is used in iodometric titration

6. (i) A white precipitate (B) is formed when a mineral (A) is boiled with Na2CO3 solution
(ii) the precipitate is filtered and the filtrate contains two compounds (C) and (D). The compound (C) is
removed by crystallization and when CO2 is passed through the mother liquor left (D) changes to (C).
(iii) The compound (C) on strong heating gives two compounds (D) and (E).
(iv) (E) on heating with cobalt oxide produces blue coloured substance (F)

7. i) Iron crystallizes in two bcc lattices the form below 910C and the  form above 1400C and in a fcc
form between these two temperature of these three crystalline phases. Only the  form can dissolve
appreciable amount of carbon.
a) What is the symmetry of a hole centered in a face of a body centered cubic unit cell and what is the
max ratio of a foreign particle radius occupying such a hole to the host ion radius.
b) What is the position of a hole whose coordinates are (0,a/2, a/4) In a bcc unit cell and what is the max
ratio of a foreign particle radius occupying such a hole to the host ion radius.
c) Why does only  form can dissolve appreciable amounts of carbon?
ii) Potassium selenate is isomorphous with potassium sulphate and contains 50.0% of Se. What is the
atomic weight of Se?

b) An aqueous solution of an unknown compound (X) gives the following reactions:
(i) It gives brown ppt. with alkaline KMnO4 solution
(ii) It forms HCl and evolves O2 when reacted with Cl2 gas
(iii) it liberates I2 from an acidified KI solution
(iv) It gives orange yellow colour with acidified titanic sulphate solution.
Identify (X) and give the chemical equations for the reactions (i), (ii) and (iii)

9. a) The density of Li metal is 0.53 g cm3 and the separation of the (1,0,0) planes of the metal is 350 pm.
Determine whether the lattice is FCC or bcc. M(Li)=6.94.
b) 5.35 g of a salt Acl (of weak base AOH) is dissolved in 250 ml of solution. The pH of the resultant solution
was found to be 4.827. Find the ionic radius of A+ and Cl if ACl forms CsCl type crytal having 2.2 g/cm3.

Given Kb(AOH) = 1.8105 r /r= 0.732 for this cell unit.

10. a) (i) Sodium salt of an acid (A) is formed on boiling white phosphorus with NaOH solution
(ii) On passing chlorine through phosphorus kept fused under water, another acid (B) is formed which on
strong heating gives metaphosphorus acid
(iii) Phosphorus on treatment with concentrated HNO3 gives an acid (C) which is also formed by the action
of dilute H2SO4 on powered phosphorite rock
(iv) (A) on treatment with a solution of HgCl2 first gives a white precipitate of compound (D) and then a
grey precipitate (E).
Identify (A) to (E) and write balanced chemical equation for the reactions at step (i) to (iv)
b) A soluble compound of a poisonous element M, when heated with Zn/H2SO4 gives a colourless and
extremely poisonous gaseous compound N, which on passing through a heated tube gives a silvery mirror
of element M. Identify M and N.

11. a) The olivine series of minerals consists in which Fe and Mg ions may substitute for each other causing
substitution impurity defect without changing the volume of the unit cell. In olivine series of minerals, oxide
ion exist as FCC with Si4+ occupying 1/4th of octahedral voids and divalent ions occupying 1/4th of
tetrahedral voids. The density of forsterite (magnesium silicate) is 3.21 g /cc and that of fayalite (ferrous
silicate) is 4.34 g /cc. Find the formula of forsterite and fayalite minerals and the mole percentage of
fayalite in an olivine with a density of 3.88 g/cc.
b) A strong current of trivalent gaseous boron passed through a germanium crystal decreases the density of
the crystal due to part replacement of gemanium by boron and due to intersititial vacancies created by
missing Ge atoms. In one such experiment, one gram of germanium is taken and the boron atoms are
found to be 150 ppm by weight, when the density of the Ge crystal decreases by 4%. Calculate the
percentage of missing vacancies due to germanium, which are filled up by boron atoms. Atomic wt.
Ge=72.6 B=11.

12. a) A compound (X) of S, Cl and O has a vapour density of 67.5. It reacts with water to form two acids and
reacts with KOH to form two salts Y and Z. while Y gives while ppt with AgNO3 solution & Z gives white
ppt with BaCl2 solution. Identify X, Y & Z. and give reaction also.
b) A solution of white solid (A) gave white precipitate (B) with water. On treatment with HCl, the ppt B
produced A. The solution of A gives black precipitate (C) on reacting with sodium stanite and NaOH. The
compound A gives a colourless gas (D) with concentrated H2SO4. the gas is soluble in water and its
aqueous solution produce precipitate with Hg2(NO3)2 but no precipitate with Hg(NO3)2. Identify (A) to (D)
and write the chemical reactions involved.


