Introduction

In the summer of 2019 I was accepted by Schlumberger for the training program they
have, a program that the company offers for the university students to give them a look at the
4
labor market and how they conduct business transactions before they graduate and join the
business filed. The training program is one of the most important requirements demanded by
the university to be able to graduate because the university is keen that the students learn the
basics of work before graduating and before getting a job and this is important for student to
be mentally and practically prepared before entering into a new and similar world for the
educational domain. The training helps the students to get acquainted with the labor market
and take a look at the course of the labor market and how to deal with it among companies
and prepares the students to work with them before graduating and give the opportunity to
highlight himself and may also help him to get the job after graduating. However, when I
began working, realized just how important the information learned in university. During my
initial hours into company, began to hear many different terminologies used by employees in
the department that sounded strange to me, I became familiar with once started working deep
in my job.

To be more specific the internship started on 30 of June 2019, and ended on 25 of

September 2019. When hired, I was expected to work in rig sites and workshops related to
drilling and measurements department, as a MWD field engineer. I learned that while drilling
we use various tools that gives us measurements and other data we need, also the
environment was new to me and to anybody who didn’t work at a rig because it’s not an
ordinary job that you get up in the morning and arrive home afternoon, it changes your life
routine because you will be working for approximately 30 days far from home and there is no
rest until you come back, this report will cover the type of work that I did in Schlumberger
drilling and measurement segment.

Internship organization

5
Schlumberger Limited is the world's largest oilfield services company. Schlumberger
employs approximately 100,000 people representing more than 140 nationalities working in
more than 85 countries. Schlumberger has four principal executive offices located
in Paris, Houston, London, and The Hague.

Schlumberger has a long record of contract drilling, both independently and through JVs,
such as Arabian Drilling Company (ADC), a drilling contractor owned by Schlumberger and
TAQA that operates land rigs in the Arabian Peninsula, as well as offshore platforms . Sahara
Well Construction Services (SWCS), a JV with ENAFOR, is an Algeria-based drilling and
well construction company that owns land drilling rigs; operations are supervised by
Schlumberger. Rig equipment from Cameron, the leader in pressure and flow control
technology, the design and engineering expertise of T&T Engineering Services, an industry
leader in land rig design, based in the US, the manufacturing capabilities of NEORig, a joint
venture with Bauer Maschinen GmbH, the world leader in foundation drilling equipment
manufacturing and, more recently, oil and gas.

Schlumberger SLB doesn’t actually sell oil at retail, but they do just about everything leading
up to that. The company specializes in what the industry calls “upstream” activity, which
involves looking for oil, drilling for it, and operating wells. If it happens before the black
gold is ready for the pipeline, Schlumberger does it.

Activities & Responsibilities

6
D&M – drilling and measurements segment:
Drilling and Measurement segment Core services provided by D&M: 1- Measurements
While Drilling (MWD) 2- Logging While Drilling (LWD) 3-Directional Drilling (DD), that I
will clarify in this report.

MWD – measurements while drilling :

From first day in the company my contract mentioned that I’m a field engineer co-op in
the department of drilling and measurements. where there are other departments and
segments, beside the rig operations type of work, the co-op program is optional for some
student whether they want to work in field, office or the workshops. Beyond direction and
inclination data, formation evaluation, and more, MWD measurements while drilling services
play a key role in driving drilling optimization and efficiency by minimizing invisible lost
time and ensuring no ROP limitation occurs while drilling because of data transmission rates.

Obtaining measurements while drilling enables operators to save time by acquiring formation
evaluation and drilling optimization data, which also helps minimize doglegs. Fit-for-purpose
MWD services provide continuous direction and inclination measurements to guide
geosteering and provide data for survey management and development planning. With such
precise wells being drilled, MWD aids drilling engineers with real-time information so that
they can make important decisions while drilling. Geosteering is a relatively new concept of
positioning wells according to the geological features in the reservoir obtained through
MWD.

LWD – logging while drilling :

For centuries, drillers (whether drilling for oil or water) have been keeping keen notes of
drilling activities. What started as a regular record of drilling depth versus cuttings observed
(also known as mud logging) has transformed to encompass various technological well
logging measurements, including electric logging, SP, induction and GR. Most recently,

7
scientists and engineers have developed Logging-While-Drilling (LWD), a type of well
logging that incorporates the logging tools into the drill string, administering, interpreting and
transmitting real-time formation measurements to the surface.

Additionally, by providing real-time information, LWD helps drillers and engineers to make
immediate decisions about the future of a well and the direction of drilling. Providing
information on porosity, resistivity, acoustic waveform, hole direction, and weight on bit,
LWD transmits logging measurements at regular intervals while drilling is taking place. Data
is transmitted to the surface through pulses through the mud column (also known as mud
pulse of mud telemetry) in real time.

DD – directional drilling :
While the technology has improved over the years, the concept of directional drilling remains
the same: drilling wells at multiple angles, not just vertically, to better reach and produce oil
and gas reserves. Additionally, directional drilling allows for multiple wells from the same
vertical well bore, minimizing the wells environmental impact.

8
Improvements in drilling sensors and global positioning technology have helped to make vast
improvements in directional drilling technology. Today, the angle of a drillbit is controlled
with intense accuracy through real-time technologies, providing the industry with multiple
solutions to drilling challenges, increasing efficiency and decreasing costs.

Tools utilized in achieving directional drills include whipstocks, bottomhole assembly (BHA)
configurations, three dimensional measuring devices, mud motors and specialized drillbits.

Now, from a single location, various wells can be drilled at many angles, tapping reserves
miles away and more than a mile below the surface.

RSS – rotary steerable system :

A tool designed to drill directionally with continuous rotation from the surface, eliminating
the need to slide a steerable motor. Rotary steerable systems typically are deployed when
drilling directional, horizontal, or extended-reach wells. State-of-the-art rotary steerable
systems have minimal interaction with the borehole, thereby preserving borehole quality. The
most advanced systems exert consistent side force similar to traditional stabilizers that rotate
with the drill string or orient the bit in the desired direction while continuously rotating at the
same number of rotations per minute as the drill string.

CRE – center of reliability and efficiency :

Located in Dammam 2nd Industrial City, the Schlumberger Middle East Center for
Reliability and Efficiency is dedicated to advanced maintenance and servicing of oil and gas
technologies for the Middle East-Gulf region.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, practical training course is essential for every student. The student learns a lot
during the internship, mostly new things that differ from college courses. Thus, they must
seek this opportunity and try to apply for internships to gain new information. In addition,
having the internship in a strong company such as Schlumberger, allow the student to gain

11
various experiences, from applying what was learned in college, and learning new things, as
well as providing informative sessions for summer and CO-OP students.
