Introductory Message
Welcome to the English Grade 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on the
appropriate use of direct and reported speech in varied contexts!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from
public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

What I Need to Know


This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master the use
of direct and reported speech appropriately in varied contexts. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond
with the textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into two categories, namely:

 Recognizing direct and reported speech


 Transforming direct speech to reported speech and vice versa

After going through this module, you are expected to:


1. Differentiate between direct and reported speech
2. Observe the tense of the verb in transforming direct and reported speech
3. Replace the pronoun in transforming direct and reported speech
4. Convert direct to reported speech and vice versa; and
5. Make a simple sentences using direct and reported speech.

How to convert Direct Speech to Reported Speech?
Example: “I am hungry,” Jose said.
Procedure 1: Identify the speech tag and the message (sentence inside the quotation mark).
Speech tag: Jose said
Message: “I am hungry”

Procedure 2: Begin your sentence with the speech tag.

How to convert Reported Speech to Direct Speech?


Example: Jose said that he was hungry.
Procedure 1: Identify the speech tag and the message

Speech tag: Jose said


Message: he was hungry

Procedure 2: If a pronoun is used in the message, change the pronoun and put it inside the
quotation marks

“I ______________________ (We change “he” into pronoun “I” because


Jose is the speaker of the message)

Procedure 3: Change the tense of the verb

Procedure 4: Write the remaining words in the message, put a comma and closing quotation
mark

Once upon a time, there was an owl and an eagle. These two birds were friends.
The animals in the jungle said that Owl and Eagle flew together. Owl and Eagle were
close friends.
Rabbit said, “There is no noise when Owl flaps its wings.
“It is because Owl is gliding in the air,” Turtle argued.
“I wonder if Eagle really fly above storms,” Rabbit exclaimed.
“Maybe, we can ask Owl!” Turtle replied.
The animals in the jungle went to Owl and Eagle to ask them questions. The two
