Comparison of materials
Pair up with your classmates and discuss the following groups of materials to find out the
positive and negative sides of them.
1. Gasoline and kerosine
a) volatility : Kerosene is much less volatile than gasoline, with a flash point temperature
of 100 degrees F. On the other hand, gasoline (or petrol) is extremely flammable with a
flash point temperature of -40 degrees F.
b) price : Gasoline is more expensive than kerosine. It the average price of gasoline world
wide is 1.42 USD per liter, and the average price of kerosine around the world is 1.15
USD
c) flammability : The flammability of kerosene is much higher than gasoline. So kerosene
will evaporate slower than gasoline. Gasoline has a flash point of -45°F and an auto-
ignition temperature of 536°F. Kerosene has a flash point of 100°F and an auto- ignition
temperature of 428°F.

2. Aluminum and steel

a) strength : Stainless steel is heavier and stronger than aluminium. Aluminium only
around 1/3 the weight of steel
b) malleability : Aluminium is very desirable metal because its more elastic than steel.
c) ductility : Aluminium is highly ductile, significally more so than steel
d) conductivity : Alumunium is good conductor of electricity. Meanwhile, steel is a bad
conductor.
e) corrosion resistance : Aluminium doesn’t rust, however it does corrode when
exposed to salt. Stainless steel is highly corrosion resistance and does not easy to rust.

3. Plasf. Ic and glass

a) fragility : Plastic is not easy to break. While the glass is very fragile and easy to break.
b) biodegrztdability : Many plastics is not biodegrade to any significant degree, regardless
of environmental condition. Glass takes a very, very long time to break down, it can take a
glass bottle one million years to decompose in environment.
c) conductivity : Plastic and glass are bad conductor of either electricity or heat.
d) weight : Plastic is generally lighter than glass, and the glass is heavier than plastic.

4. Copper and wood

a) conductivity : Among non-precious metals, copper has the highest conductivity. And
the woods exhibit a low thermal conductivity
b) strength : Depends on the temperature, copper is harder when its cold. Meanwhile,
wood is strong but it can't compete with any kind of steel since wood is natural
c) durability : Copper is durable, it maintain its electrical conductivity and generally
corrode over a time. Wood is durable and strong. Wood is a resilient materials that
provides decades even centuries.

5. Diesel and gasoline

a) price : Gasoline is cheaper than diesel. The average price of diesel around the world is
1.35 USD per litre, and the average price of gasoline around the worls is 1.29 USD per
litre.
b) pollutant content : Gasoline is a greater polluter than diesel. While diesel fuel contains
slightly more carbon (2.68kg CO₂/litre) than petrol (231kg CO₂/litre), overall CO,
emissions of a diesel car tend to be lower.
c) appearance : The texture of diesel is thicker and more oily than gasoline, and the texture
of gasoline is lighter than diesel.
