Topic 3: What does the research say about advantages and disadvantages of distance
education?
Literature Review:
E-learning and distance education have a very important place in modern education.
These new learning approaches have led to extensive discussions in educational
literature. This study aims to examine the common advantages and disadvantages of e-
learning and distance education, which are examined in five different sources.
The advantages mentioned in the sources are that both e-learning and distance
education provide flexibility in study programs and allow students to learn at their own
pace and from anywhere. Oliveira et al. (2018.) These educational methods provide
easy access to course materials and resources. Kotrikadze and Zharkova (2021). E-
learning and distance education often make education more affordable by reducing
costs associated with commuting, housing, and on-campus resources. Vinayaraj and
Mathew (2022). They offer individuals with busy schedules the convenience of attending
classes and accessing materials anytime, anywhere. Al Rawashdeh et al. (2021). Some
programs provide personalized learning paths that allow students to customize their
education. Both methods encourage self-discipline and self-motivation, as students must
manage their time and study independently. Online education methods help maintain
social distance and reduce the risk of virus transmission (during the COVID-19
pandemic). Due to its flexibility, it allows students to spend more time with their families.
Online platforms also offer a variety of learning resources and materials to support
students' education.
