Rocks are subjected to

stresses ( tectonic
processes ) they
begin to deform,
deform by folding
and faulting.
Folding occur when rocks are
pushed towards each
other from opposite
sides.
Kinds of tectonic process:
Tensional stress When something is
(strengthing ) pulled apart.
Compressional when a rock is
stress (squeezing ) pressed together into
itself.
Shearing stress it can cause one
( side to side object to slide over
shearing) another.
Common Type of Folds
Anticline Upward arch
Syncline Downward arch
Dome is a circular or
elliptical and decline
in which the limbs
giveaway in all
directions.
Basin is a circular or
elliptical syncline in
which the limbs dip
toward the center.
Faulting is the fracturing and
displacement of
brittle rocks strata
along a fault plane,
falls and fractures
along the crust in
which displacement
has occurred.
1. Dip-Slip the movement of two
Fault blocks is vertical.
2 kinds of Dip-Slip Fault
Normal Fault the hanging wall
block moves down
relative to the foot
wall block.
Reverse Fault hanging wall moves
up relative to the foot
wall block.
2. Strike-Slip The dominant
Fault displacement is
horizontal and
parallel.
