Banha University Sheet No. 4
Course Title: Computer Applications in Power System Engineering

Write MATLAB program to calculate the requirements in each problem.

EX4.1: The system shown in Figure 4.1 is initially on no load with generators operating at their rated
voltage with their emfs in phase. The rating of the generators and the transformers and their
respective percent reactances are marked on the diagram. All resistances are neglected. The line
impedance is 𝑗160 Ω . A three-phase balanced fault occurs at the receiving end of the transmission
line. Determine the short circuit current and the short-circuit MVA.

EX4.2: The one-line diagram of a simple power system is shown in Figure 4.2. Each generator is represented
by an emf behind the transient reactance. All impedances are expressed in per unit on a common MVA base.
All resistances and shunt capacitances are neglected. The generators are operating on no load at their rated
voltage with their emfs in phase. A three-phase fault occurs at bus 1 through a fault impedance of
𝑍𝑓 = 𝑗0.08 per unit.
(a) Using Thevenin’s theorem to obtain the impedance to the point of fault and the fault current
in per unit.
(b) Determine the bus voltages and line currents during fault.
(c) Check the results calculated in part (a, b) by using Bus impedance matrix.

EX4.3: The one-line diagram of a simple three-bus power system is shown in Figure 4.3. Each generator is
represented by an emf behind the sub-transient reactance. All impedances are expressed in per unit on a
common MVA base. All resistances and shunt capacitances are neglected. The generators are operating on no
load at their rated voltage with their emfs in phase. A three-phase fault occurs at bus 3 through a fault
impedance of 𝑍𝑓 = 𝑗0.19 per unit.
(a) Using Thevenin’s theorem to obtain the impedance to the point of fault and the fault current
in per unit.
(b) Determine the bus voltages and line currents during fault.
(c) Check the results calculated in part (a, b) by using Bus impedance matrix.

EX4.4: The one-line diagram of a simple four-bus power system is shown in Figure 4.4. Each generator is
represented by an emf behind the transient reactance. All impedances are expressed in per unit on a common
MVA base. All resistances and shunt capacitances are neglected. The generators are operating on no load at
their rated voltage with their emfs in phase. A bolted three-phase fault occurs at bus 4.
(a) Using Thevenin’s theorem to obtain the impedance to the point of fault and the fault current
in per unit.
(b) Determine the bus voltages and line currents during fault.
(c) Repeat (a) and (b) for a fault at bus 2 with a fault impedance of 𝑍𝑓 = 𝑗0.0225 pu.
(d) Check the results calculated in part (a, b and c) by using Bus impedance matrix.
