SECTION B. STRUCTURED QUESTION

1 Complete the sentences about food and digestion using words from the list.

Each word may be used once, more than once, or not at all.12p21q3

absorbed antibodies germs duodenum

egested enzymes fat stomach water

The ........ stomach........ secretes hydrochloric acid. One function of this acid in the body is to

kill .............. germs........... in the food. Most food that is eaten has to be digested before it can

be ..... absorbed..... by the body. Most chemical digestion is carried out by special proteins

called ......... enzymes....... One component of the diet that does not need to be digested is

......... water.............

2 Fig. 2.1 shows a diagram of digestive organs.

Fig. 2.1

(a) Use the letters on the diagram above to identify:

the large intestine, P

the pancreas, M

the stomach. L [3]

HF/CTW1/BIO/G8/2021-2022 Page 2
(b) State one function for each of these parts of the alimentary canal.

Large intestine

Absorbs the water from undigested food, then decompose the undigested food into faeces

helped by harmless bacteria.

Pancreas

Secretes the intestinal juice that contain some enzymes to be sent to duodenum (small

intestine).

Stomach

Churns the bolus and turns it into chyme with gastric juice. While this process takes place,

pepsin breaks down the protein into smaller protein (peptides)

[3]

(c) (i) On the diagram above draw a label line to show where bile is made.
Label it X.
The answer is on the Fig. 2.1
[1]
(

ii) State the action that bile has on fats in the small intestine.

Bile emulsifies / breaks down large fat globules to smaller ones. [1]

(iii) Explain how this action speeds up the digestion of fats.

Emulsification process increases the surface area of fat globules, so it will help the

lipase to digest the fat more rapidly. [2]

3 Many types of enzymes are involved in digestion.

(a) State the general function of enzymes.

To speed up chemical reactions in the body. [1]

(b) State the names of three digestive enzymes in the human alimentary canal.

1 amylase

2 pepsin

3 lipase [3]

(c) Explain the importance of chemical digestion.

The importance of chemical digestion is to produce or provide the smallest molecule of

food (nutrients), so it will be able to be absorbed by the body. [3]

(d) Explain the role of mechanical digestion.

To break down the large size of food into smaller pieces, so that the food pieces will be

easier to be digested chemically. [3]

4 Blood is made up of four major components. One component is a liquid, while the others are

solid.

Name the four major components of blood and state their function.

Name: plasma

Function: carry nutrients, hormones, and other dissolved materials in the blood, including the

blood cells.

Name: red blood cells (erythrocytes)

Function: carry oxygen to all cells and carry away carbon dioxide from the cells to be removed.

Name: white blood cells (leukocytes)

Function: Immunity for body from any invaders, diseases, and infections.

Name: platelets (thrombocytes)

Function: help to clot the blood to avoid the excessive bleeding and recover the wound. [8]

5 Fig. 5.1 shows the human heart and the main blood vessels. The functions of the parts of the

heart and some of the blood vessels are given in Table 5.1.

1 High amount of cholesterol

2 Lack of exercise

3 Stress

7 (a) Complete Table 7.1 about heart chambers of Vertebrates.

Table 7.1

Animals Heart chambers

Fish Fish have two-chambered heart consisting of one atrium to receive blood

and one ventricle to eject it.

Amphibians Amphibians have a three-chambered heart consisting on two atria and one

ventricle.

Reptiles It is seen that the Reptiles have incomplete four-chambered hearts,

because there is a hole or gap named foramen of Panizza.

OR

Amphibians have a three-chambered heart consisting on two atria and one

ventricle.

Birds Birds have complete four-chambered hearts.

Mammals Mammals have complete four-chambered hearts.

[5]

(b) Crocodile’s heart chambers is different compared to other reptiles. State the reason.

Crocodile has complete 4-chambered heart because crocodile doesn’t have foramen of

Panizza between the right and left chambers. [3]
