Why does heat insulation need an air seal?

Insulation with stationary air

The effects of heat insulation are based on the air inclusions in the insulating material (cellulose flakes; cork, wool, mineral fibres;
or other materials)

Protected heat insulation is an efficient solution for keeping rooms pleasantly warm in winter
However, these air inclusions must be isolated from moving air if the insulation effects are to be maintained. The ideal insulation fulfils these requi-
rements. Also the heat insulation effects of a wool jumper are based on stationary air inclusions in the fibres: As soon as a cold wind blows, the insu-
lating effects weaken. Putting a thin windbreaker over the top reinstates the insulation effects: the insulating material is sealed off on all sides.
In summer: It is less hot indoors

1
2 1 Full rafter insulation
2 Air seal

In the case of summer heat insulation, the indoor increase in temperature is proportional to the outdoor
temperature and the time in hours the heat needs to progress from the underside of the tiles into the living
space. In summer, the target is to keep the heat outdoors for as long as possible.
The optimal solution is for the heat to start arriving in the evening hours, when it can be aired off directly. The
calculated values apply only when the structure is airtight and the heat must work inwards pore by pore.

1
2
1 Full rafter insulation
2 Air seal not tight
A poor air seal lets the heat enter the insulating material, with a considerable reduction to the effective
insulation thickness. The consequences: The actual summer heat insulation is far less than the calculated value.
Heat reaches the indoors faster, and the temperature increases more.
Condensate can cause structural damage and mould
Indoors Outdoors

Cooling

Condensate

Warm indoor air escapes to the outside where it cools. The result is condensate.
Structural damage and mould may follow.

moisture air seal pro clima INTELLO is also a reliable solution for the condensation and evaporation rates to be only 10 g/m² for the vapour
particularly demanding needs of structures with fully insulated com- retarder, but 3400 g/m² for the pro clima INTELLO solution. Structures
partments and external vapour retardant panelling (e.g. wooden clad- with the pro clima INTELLO vapour retardant sheeting (open to diffusi-
ding with bitumen felt), as shown below. on) therefore offer extremely high levels of protection against structu-
ral damage caused by leaks, and so are more tolerant to faults.
Lower energy costs, less CO2 emissions

The structure’s efficiency, reliability, and functionality depend greatly on the installation of air seal sheets, their
interbonding, and their airtight joins to all adjoining structural elements and lead-throughs.

Any leaks have consequences:

• There may be structural damage and mould
• Homes lose value
• Rooms too cold in winter, with draughts and overly dry indoor air
• Poor summer heat insulation
• Compromised sound insulation
• Heat losses, high energy costs
• Greater CO2 emissions

Comparison: air tight v not air tight

The Institute for Building Physics in Stuttgart analysed a heat insulation structure of 1 x 1 m with an insulating thickness of 14 cm. The previ-
ously calculated insulation performance of 0.30 W/m²K could be verified on gap free, air tight variants. If the same structure exhibits a gap of
only 1 mm in the air seal level, this U value deteriorates to 1.44 W/m²K.

–10 °C
And even higher heat losses are the result for wider gaps and greater air pressure diffe-
rences. This may reach an extent when homes can no longer be heated adequately under
heavy frost and high wind pressure, although the insulation’s U value has been calculated
correctly!

In other words, five times as much heat is lost as

through the airtight structure.

diffusion resistance offers structures a considerably greater
protection potential against structural damage than conven-
tional sheeting. They are more diffusion tight in winter and
protect the insulation against encroaching moisture. In sum-
mer, it can reduce its diffusion resistance to a great extent,
thereby safeguarding the best possible conditions for
redrying.

Conventional vapour retardant and air seal sheeting can cause damage

Mould promoted by condensate

There is a threat of mould to the building’s fabric when
in winter warm, moist indoor air penetrates e.g. the
gaps in the vapour retardant and air seal level in the
heat insulation structure and gives rise to large quanti-
ties of condensate. Although conventional, high diffusi-
on resistant vapour retardant and air seal sheeting does
prevent the penetration of moisture in the winter, it
does allow only very little indoor-side redrying in sum-
mer. The consequence can be moisture traps.
