Improving School Lavatory Facilities: A Student-Centered Approach

Introduction

Recognizing the importance of addressing these challenges, this research aims to

investigate and promote an alternative approach to school lavatory facilities: a student-centered

approach. In this approach, lavatory facilities are designed, maintained, and managed with a

primary focus on meeting the needs and expectations of the students who use them daily. It

acknowledges that improving the lavatory experience for students can have a positive impact on

their well-being, health, and educational success.

Taking a student-centered approach aims to address an overlooked area that affects

students' well-being and learning environment. This initiative focuses on enhancing restroom

facilities within institutions to create an inclusive and comfortable space for students. The aim is

to promote hygiene, privacy, and overall well-being. This approach prioritizes the physical and

emotional needs of students in an environment that supports learning and personal growth more

effectively.

This research will investigate how a student-centered approach can lead to improvements

in lavatory facilities, thereby enhancing students' satisfaction with their school environment,

promoting healthier hygiene practices, and contributing to a more positive overall educational

experience. By examining these aspects, we hope to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the

significance of school lavatories in educational settings and offer practical insights into ways to

address the existing challenges through a student-centered lens.

Statement of the Problem

School restrooms, especially for males, are severely lacking in sanitation. The stench

emitted from the toilets is foul but bearable. However, it is still an issue due to how long it has

been this way. There is little to no maintenance on the flush systems of the toilets, which

prevents the disposal of urinal excretes. A foul smell is then produced due to the accumulation of

urine. Despite this, the urinals have working flushes, but the stench will persist as long as it is not

resolved. The cleanliness of the lavatory will also depend on the student. If possible, they should

learn to adopt a more sanitary use of the restroom.

This study sought to answer the following questions:

1. How will we prevent the contamination of the school lavatory?

2. How will we teach students sanitary habits in the restroom?

3. How can we help maintain the sanitation of the school restrooms?

Primary Objective

The primary objective of the research is to investigate, develop, and promote a student-

centered approach to enhancing school lavatory facilities. This approach aims to prioritize

students' needs, preferences, and well-being when it comes to the design, maintenance, and

management of lavatory facilities within educational institutions.

Specifically, the research will seek to:

1. Conduct surveys, interviews, or focus groups to understand the specific needs and

preferences of students concerning lavatory facilities.

2. Assess the current state of lavatory facilities within a sample of schools.

3. Analyze the outcomes of implementing a student-centered approach to school

lavatory facilities.
Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the issues that unsanitary behavior and lack of maintenance affect

the image of the school lavatory at San Ildefonso College.

Hypothesis

A student-centered approach to the design and maintenance of school lavatory facilities,

which prioritizes cleanliness, privacy, accessibility, and the overall well-being of students, will

lead to improved sanitation practices, enhanced satisfaction, and a more positive school

environment.

This hypothesis suggests that by focusing on students' needs and preferences in lavatory

design and management, the quality of school lavatories will improve, ultimately benefiting

students' hygiene, comfort, and overall school experience. The research would aim to test and

provide evidence for this hypothesis.

Implementing a student-centered approach to improve school lavatory facilities will

result in higher levels of student satisfaction, increased hygiene practices, and a more positive

overall learning environment.
