DTU Nanolab
Fall 2023
In this course you will learn about Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM),
Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX, EDS, EDXS), Transmission Elec-
tron Microscopy (TEM) and Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (EELS). You
will learn basic operation of the tools, datra analysis and interpretation. After
the course and a short check by Nanbolab sta you should be able to use SEM
and TEM at DTU Nanolab.
The learning objectives of the course are
List the various components of an electron microscope.
Discuss the dierent tools in the context of a specic characterization
task.
Construct an experimental approach for a specic characterization ques-
tion.
Explain data acquired using electron microscopy.
Evaluate conclusions based on electron microscopy data.
Combine and Integrate microscopy data with complementary data.
1 Written Assignment
To get a feeling of your knowledge of these techniques and how they can be
used in your research project please write a short report, only about 1-2 pages
including gures, about you project. You should include which questions you
hope to get answered and which results you hope to achieve. Please also add
details about how you envision using the techniques within your project. Please
refrain from writing a lot about the state-of-the-art about the topic. On the rst
day of the course (September 25th ) you should give a 5-10 minute presentation
of your report. Please send the report to Shima Kadkhodazadeh and Thomas
W. Hansen (shka@dtu.dk; thwh@dtu.dk) by September 18th 2023.
If time allows, you will also during the course be able to analyze your own
samples. In order for this to work, the samples need to be microscope-ready,
meaning that not further sample preparation is required. Please ask if you have
any questions about this. Keep in mind that there will only be very limited
time available for studying your own sample, so do not expect publication-ready
results.
