II. Program/Plan/Project Profile

Title IWAS Konta Dengue (Intensive Waste Segregation)
Rationale Dengue fever is a significant public health concern in many tropical
and subtropical regions, including the Philippines. Barangay
Lingayon in Alangalang, Leyte, is no exception to the challenges
posed by dengue. This rationale proposes a comprehensive strategy
to combat dengue through waste segregation, with a particular
focus on improving children's school participation and learning
performance.
Dengue is primarily transmitted through the Aedes aegypti
mosquito, which breeds in stagnant water sources, such as
discarded containers, tires, and other containers that can hold
water. Proper waste management and segregation can significantly
reduce these breeding sites, thereby minimizing the risk of dengue
transmission. By adopting an effective waste segregation program
in Barangay Lingayon, the community can actively contribute to
dengue prevention.
Children are among the most vulnerable to dengue fever. They
often lack the immunity that adults possess, making them more
susceptible to severe cases of the disease. An outbreak of dengue
can lead to school absenteeism, impacting the children's overall
health and education. By implementing waste segregation practices
that reduce mosquito breeding sites, children's exposure to dengue
can be minimized, thus promoting their health and overall well-
being.
Dengue outbreaks can result in higher absenteeism rates, as
children who contract the disease are unable to attend school. By
reducing the prevalence of dengue in the community through waste
segregation, we can create a safer environment for children. Lower
disease incidence translates to fewer missed school days, enabling
children to attend school regularly, which is crucial for their
educational development.
Regular school attendance is essential for optimal learning. When
children frequently attend school, they have more opportunities to
engage in classroom activities, interact with teachers and peers, and
access the necessary resources to improve their learning
performance. This can have a positive impact on their academic
achievement and overall educational outcomes.
introducing waste segregation initiatives in Barangay Lingayon can
teach children the importance of environmental responsibility and
community participation. By actively involving children in waste
segregation programs, they learn to appreciate the connection
between their actions and the community's well-being, including
dengue prevention. This instills a sense of civic duty, further
encouraging children to contribute to the overall health and
cleanliness of their environment.
Waste segregation programs involve community-wide participation
and cooperation. By encouraging the entire community to engage in
this initiative, Barangay Lingayon fosters a sense of unity and
shared responsibility. This collective effort can strengthen social
bonds, and as children see adults actively participating, they are
more likely to embrace the practice, leading to long-term benefits
for dengue prevention.
Combating dengue through waste segregation in Barangay
Lingayon, Alangalang, Leyte, is a comprehensive approach that
addresses both the health and educational needs of children. By
reducing the prevalence of dengue and promoting a cleaner
environment, children can attend school regularly, participate
actively in their education, and ultimately improve their learning
performance. Additionally, this initiative fosters a sense of
responsibility and community involvement, creating a healthier,
safer, and more education-friendly environment for the children of
Barangay Lingayon.
