Abstract
Senior High Grade 11 STEM towards genetically modified foods and to examine their
awareness about their knowledge towards genetically modified foods. This study was
conducted using phenomenological research design and a descriptive type. Using one on
one semi-structured interview and Komori process, qualitative data from transcript were
collected and then prepared for phenomenological data analysis to yield themes that yield
modified foods which were purposively picked. The central question was, “What are the
perceptions of the STEM students towards genetically modified foods?” The results
indicated that the students are knowledgeable about genetically modified foods. This
paper capitalizes on the four found themes: knowledge about the topic, knowledge about
the process, ways on did they learn and reaction upon learning genetically modified
foods. At practical point, many students gave their different knowledge about the process
and same perspective what genetically modified food is. This study revealed that most of
the students are amazed upon leaning genetically modified foods which means they are
aware of what genetically modified is. Also, most of the STEM students were learned in
their General Biology Teachers. The findings of this study can help the future researchers
as a reference for their study which is related to this topic. It will serve as a guide for
Genetic Modified Foods (GM Foods) also known as Genetic Engineered Foods
(GE Foods) are foods made from organisms and it is a method of changing the DNA of
the foods by genetic engineering (Plumer B, 2015). According to Barclay C. (2009) the
term "genetic modification", when applied to food refers to any artificial alteration in the
genetic makeup of a food animal or plant, or to the use of genetic engineering techniques
in the production and manufacturing of food. It, therefore, covers a whole range of
techniques. “Genetic a modification is used for upgrading a specific trait for which a
specific protein is required (Piffle, 2016). In most cases, the aim is to introduce a new,
not naturally occurring trait to the plant. According to Mendoza, P. (2017) Scientists
define GM or biotech crops as plants used in agriculture, where the DNA has been

purposive sampling it is one of the usually used techniques in any qualitative inquiry
sampling where the researcher deliberately chooses who to include in the study based on
their ability to provide necessary data. We decided to include criteria in order to classify
the respondents of the study. The following criteria were formulated: (1) Grade 11 Fidelis
Senior High Student, (2) Must belong to STEM strands and must have background
knowledge about genetically modified foods. The rationale for choosing this approach
was that there were a small number of student who knew GMO. Having these set, twenty

interview as the data collection strategy. This type of data collection method is used to
communicate with the respondents to further understand what they are saying. This type
of interview does not require to be formal. We used this method to gather more relevant
information. The guide questions in the interview encompassed inquiries in line with the
specific questions. The following questions were used during the interview: (1) What are
your knowledge about Genetically Modified Foods? (2) What are your knowledge about
the process of modifying foods genetically? (3) How did you learn GM Foods? (4) How
did you react upon learning GM Foods? According to Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
(2009), the semi-structured interview guide gives a clear set of instructions for
interviewers and can provide reliable, comparable qualitative data and also enable
informants the freedom to show their insights in their own words. Individual interviews
were recorded using mobile phones. Bloor M. & Wood F. (2011) “The recording of audio
data through devices such as tape recorders and voice recorder has been a significant

We gathered the data from an audio recording. The data from the audio recorder
was transcribed by the researchers. After that, we code the data through a Computer
device. According to Boyatzis (2009), a “good code” is one that captures the qualitative
richness of the phenomenon. We ensured the integrity of the codes that we have not been
misinterpreted and we also read and reread the data, checking the data for validation. We
identified the themes and subthemes from the coded data. We were able to define each
theme sufficiently so that it is clear to understand what the theme is. Lastly, we finalized
the name of each theme and we wrote the description. We used thematic analysis to gain
insight and knowledge from the data gathered. The method enabled us to develop a
The primary purpose of this study is to analyze the perceptions of the students
towards Genetically Modified Foods. This paper expounds the four found themes:
perceptions, process, and ways on how did they learn and how did they reacted. Knowing
Genetically Modified foods is advantageous for the students. It will serve as their guide
whether they must consume or avoid foods that was genetically modified to know if there
are benefits or none. According to ukessays.com (2016) the benefits and risks of any
particular genetically modified crop depend on the interactions of its ecological functions
and natural history with the agro-ecosystem and ecosystems within which it is embedded.
As stated, there are four (4) emergent themes which were extracted from the

PERCEPTION OF STUDENTS TOWARDS GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS
Theme One
The aim of this study is to determine the knowledge towards genetically modified foods.
Genetic modifications of food products are gaining more and more interest, since they
represent an effective and promising way to improve a wide range of food characteristics,
including production, nutritive value, and shelf life. Consumers have not had many
possibilities yet for seeking out, buying and consuming genetically modified food
products. Probably it is due to access to information that the production of GM food (soy,
corn, rice) can be helpful for reducing hunger in the world (Miraglia et al. 1998, Pan
2002). All of the respondents says that the genetically modified foods are the

Theme Two
There are many ways on the process of modifying food genetically. This research
presents the minority of the students on their knowledge about the process of GM foods
in the way of cutting or getting the good trait and put it to another food to get a good
product. As stated by E. Wax (2018), “Scientists take the gene for a desired trait in one
plant or animal, and they insert that gene into a cell of another plant or animal”.

Having an idea about the process of modifying foods genetically can help us to
know what it is and to be aware on the foods that we eat, if it is healthy or not. According
to A. O’Neill (2017), “GMOs can help in a variety of ways. But, those ways are not
Theme Three
There are many ways to figure out what is Genetically Modified Foods. This
research shows that majority of the respondents learned about GM Foods through their
subject General Biology 2 that was taught by their GenBio Teacher. It is a big help that

According to Adams (2016) it’s an overwhelming and confusing topic, but since
80 percent of the processed foods on our grocery store shelves contain ingredients
derived from genetically engineered crops, it’s important we learn about them and make
decisions about how they fit into our home. That's why it is important to learn and one of
the reason why it is being taught. Having a better understanding about what really GM
Food is, can help us to become aware about it and know if it is beneficial or if it is risky
to consume.

Theme Four
Learning genetically modified foods are very important in our society because it
helps you to know what nutrition and what physical traits added from one organism. This
research shows that most of the respondents are surprised upon learning genetically
modified foods. And also this study shows that majority of the participants are
“Nakaka shock siya kase it is possible pero depende pa rin siya sa compatibility
organism.”
According to Hallman W, et al. (2010) that most of the respondents rated their
knowledge to be poor; 48% stated that they knew very little about GMOs, whereas 16%
felt they knew nothing at all, compared with 30% knowing a fair amount and just 5%
knowing a great deal about GMOs. This study shows that majority of the participants are
not aware what genetically modified is and which contradicts in our study.

nutrients or traits nga.
orange.
Genetically Modified Foods is basically like fruits that has
traits of another one that is planted into it through genetical
engineering.
So most of the time, everytime na maririnig ko yung
Genetically Modified Foods its more beneficial sya sa
from those food then also tung mga ganon inapply din sya

specially when we are talking about fruits and vegetable na
another organism.
mapaganda ung characteristic

also advantages for humans.
Yun nga, kapag naimplant yung isang trait ng isang food
sa ibang food magkakaroon ng ibang resulta.
There are various steps and process that are needed to
consider when modifying food genetically like identifying
the trait of chosen organism then comparing the genomes
of two organisms until the new trait is inserted into new
genome.
We are just getting the good characteristics of two same
