Volumes – Earthwork Calculations

1. Volumes from the cross - sections

Fig 1: Sections level across

\\
Worked Example of the above equation

At a certain station an embankment formed on level ground has a height at its centre

line of 3.10 m. If the breadth of formation was 12.50 m, find i). Side widths, ii). The

area of the cross – section given that the side slope is 1 vertical to 2.5 horizontal.
Solution

2. Sections with cross – fall

This type of section is sometimes known as a “two – level sections”, since the two

levels are required to establish the cross – fall of 1 in K.

Worked Example 1

Calculate the side widths and cross – sectional area of an embankment to a road with

formation width of 12.50 m, and side slopes of 1 vertical to 2 horizontal, when the

centre – height was 3.10 m and the existing ground had a cross – fall of 1 in 12 at

right angles of the embankment.

Solution
Worked Example 2

A cutting is to be made in ground which has a traverse slope of 1 in 5. The width of

formation is 8 m and the side slopes are 1 vertical to 2 horizontal. If the depth at the

centre line of three sections 20 m apart are 2.50 m, 3.10 m and 4.30 m respectively,

determine the volume of earth involved in this length.
