My indomitable urge to write

I vividly remember that in 6th grade, we had a new teacher for English literature, whose
austere face was only exceeded in severity by her uncompromising didacticism. It would not
be an overstatement to say that the idea of being castigated by her in an open class caused
many pupils to fall sick before meeting her. Therefore, it was not unnatural on my part to
treat the otherwise seemingly inconsequential subject with severe caution. It was then that I
was introduced to the world of English literature marked by stalwarts like William
Wordsworth, William Blake, H.G Wells, Ruskin Bond and of course my favourite, O.Henry.
For me, what they did was create a wormhole, not with science but pen and paper,
instantaneously taking me far from reality to a world of their own, a world of rhythm, a world
of clever ingenuity and a world which talks about the unwavering condition of being a
human.
I began writing poems and expressed myself in the literature exams where it was not
uncommon for teachers to commend the way I framed answers. I took to writing short stories,
essays and movie reviews. What eventually became clear to me was the fact that writing is
one of the reasons for my existence, my proclivity to become a wizard on paper trailed me as
I participated in various creative writing contests, winning quite a few of them. I, however,
have one pivotal literary dream. To have my works published in the Indian School
curriculum. This is because, since it was the ICSE school syllabus that opened up the world
of fiction for me, I must follow the rules of the universe and give back what I received. I
sincerely wish to become one of the best writers of my time and give back to the world, what
it gave to me, an indomitable urge to write.

It was pleasing to know that IIM Lucknow has a dedicated club for literature as it gives me a
platform to begin my foray into giving back to society apart from writing in closed spaces.
One good poem or story, or even a humanly crafted sentence can sway readers in ways brute
force never can. It, therefore becomes important, to use them wisely and with care. They are
our greatest source of strength.

Literature is the legacy we leave behind ourselves, an artefact for future civilizations to know
us by, a means of talking to the future. I want to be a part of this legacy and I believe my
journey takes me through 42.
