SBA #3 Determine Conc of HCL
SBA #3 Determine Conc of HCL
Topic: Moles
Aim: To determine the concentration of hydrochloric acid, which supplies the H+ ions in the
following reaction.
In the presence of an excess of IO3 – ions and an excess of I- ions, the amount of I2 liberated is
directly proportional to the amount of H+ ions present and can be determined by titration with
sodium thiosulphate, Na2S2O3.
Reagents:

Results: Table showing vol of FA2 used to liberate iodine in the titration

Calculations:
1. From the titration results obtain a suitable value to be used in your calculation. Show
clearly how you obtained this value.
2. (a) Calculate the concentration in mol/dm3 of the sodium thiosulphate in FA2. FA2
contains 15.0g/dm3 Na2S2O3.5H2O.
(b) Calculate how many moles of Na2S2O3 are contained in the volume of FA2
recorded in (#1).
(c) Calculate how many moles of iodine reacted with the thiosulphate in (b).
(d) Calculate how many moles of hydrochloric acid reacted with an excess of potassium iodate
(V) and an excess of potassium iodide to produce the amount of iodine calculated in (c).
IO3- (aq) + 5I- (aq) + 6H+ (aq) à 3H2O (l) + 3I2 (aq)
