Question 1

A carbonate of a metal, M, has the formula M2CO3. The equation for the reaction with HCl is
given below

M2CO3 (aq) + 2HCl (aq)  2MCl (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

6.125g of M2CO3 was used to prepare 250cm3 of solution. 40cm3 of the solution was
required to neutralize exactly 23.6 cm3 of 0.150 mol/dm3 HCl.

(a) What is the concentration of the carbonate solution prepared?

(b) Find the identity of M

If 10.5 cm3 of your original solution was used to make a new 125ml solution, what would be the
concentration of this new solution? Show all working and explanations

Question 2

1. Phosphorus trichloride, PCl3, reacts with water to form phosphorous acid and
hydrochloric acid.

(a) Which is the limiting reagent when 12.4g of PCl3 is mixed with 10.0g of water? (5
mks)
(b) What mass of phosphorus acid is expected? (3 mks)
(c) If 5.21g of phosphorous acid was recovered after the reaction, what is the percent
yield of phosphorous acid in this reaction? (2mks)
