TEMPLATE FOR DESIGN OF PIPE CULVERTE

General Guidelines
a) Hume Pipe Culvert (HPC) shall be provided for disposal of storm water through
RCC pipes and unflumed canal is taken over the HPC.

b) HPC is economical option for small stream having catchment area up to 50 Ha.
(0.50 Sq.Km.) with flood depth up to 1.20 m and for flood discharge upto 10
cumecs.

c) RCC pipe of required class of max. diameter 1200 mm in maximum 4 rows may be
provided with 0.50 m. gap between two rows. Minimum dia. of the pipe shall be
0.60 m for maintenance point of view. The pipe's vent way shal be designed for
velocity of 1.0 m/sec. ( self cleansing velocity ) to 2.5 m/sec. (non abbrassive) .

d) Invert level of the pipe may be kept 0.15 m. below stream bed Level.

e) The NP2 pipe shall be provided with encased in concrete M15, with skin
reinforcement of 10 mm dia. @ 250 c/c both way, all faces to avoid damages to the
pipes and to sustained overburden pressure and to make the HPC durable.
Encasing thickness shall be of 150 mm to 300 mm.

f) Minimum depth for head wall shall be 1.25 m below stream bed level for soft strata
but may be taken at higher level with embedment of 0.60 m in case of hard rock.

g) Top of the headwall shall be generally kept 0.60 m. above the soffit of the pipe.
Pipe diameter of HPC is decided so as it should run fully. Toes of the canal
embankment shall be protected upto 0.60 m. above the soffit of pipe by dry rubble
pitching.

h) When natural drainage is suitable for HPC, but headway is not available, and the
stream bed slope is quite steep, drop HPC shall be provided.

i) For skew crossing, HPC shall be provided right angle to the canal alignment with
suitable regradation of stream on U/S & D/S side.

j) CC M15 apron of 0.20 m thickness shall be provided at stream bed atleast 3.0 m at
U/S & D/S of the HPC.

Step 3:- Calculation of Diameter and no. of Pipe

i) Select diameter of pipe from drop down ( 0.60 to 1.20 m )
ii) Put the value gradient of pipe from drop down so as the fulfill the condition of Velocity
as described below. Normally, gradient of 1:100 to 1:300 makes HPC hydraulically most
effective.
a) If Velocity is less than 1.00 m/sec. then " Increase Gradient of Pipe "
b) If Velocity is greater than 2.50 m/sec. then " Decrease of Pipe "
c) If Velocity is in between 1.00 to 2.50 m/sec. then " Hence O.K. "

Diameter of Pipe ( m ) : 1.2 m

Gradient of Pipe : 1 : 250

Velocity in Pipe if < 1.0 : 0.606 m/sec Increase Gradient of

Pipe.

if >2.5 : 2.600 m/sec Decrease Gradient of

Pipe

if 1.0 to 2.5 : 2.171 m/sec Hence OK.

iii) Select nos. of row from drop down to pass design discharge.
If above all three conditions as i), ii) & iii) are not fulfill then revised parameters
of pipe calculations as dia of pipe, gradient of pipe or no. of pipe so as all conditions
should be as a " Hence O.K. "

Once above all three conditions is as a " Hence O.K. " then go for subsequent
drawing as described below.

STEP 4 : Calculation of Diameter & Nos. of Pipe.

Diameter of Pipe calculated considering Pipe running in Full

Required Dischare Q = 3.3610 Cumec
Diameter of pipe D = 1.20 m
Gradient of Nalla S = 1: 246 Existing ( optional )
Gradient of Pipe S = 1: 250 Proposed
Rugosity coefficient N = 0.0130
Length of pipe Provided L = 15 m
No. of rows = 2
Area of pipe A = 1.1300 Sq.m
Wetted perimeter P = 3.7680 m
Hydraulic mean depth R = 0.3000
R 2/3 = 0.4480
1 / S 1/2 = 0.0630
Velocity through pipe = V2 = 1 / N x R 2/3 x 1/S 1/2
= 76.923 x 0.448x0.063
= 2.1710 m/s
Hence OK.
C = 1/(1+Ke+Kf)^0.50
Ke = 0.5
Kf = 20 x n^2 x L/R^1.33
= 20 x 0.013^2 x (15/0.3^1.33)
= 0.251
C = 0.76
Discharge Q = C x A x V2
= 0.76 x 1.13 x 2.171
= 1.864 cumecs
For 2 rows, Total Q = 3.728 cumecs > 3.361Cumecs

Hence O.K.

STEP 5 : Calculation of Dropped NBL

Dropped NBL = CBL - Cushion over pipe - Diameter Of pipe - pipe thickness.
Assume Dia. Of pipe = 1200 mm
Min. Cushion = 0.60 m
pipe thk. = 70 mm
Pipe Bed slope 1 in = 250
Dropped NBL = 243.19 - 0.6 - 1.27
= 241.3200 m
NBL at crossing = 243.1050 m
NBL at crossing - Dropped NBL = 1.78 m
Hence 1.785 m DROP REQUIRED

It is proposed to provide ' Drop HPC ' at this RD . Accordingly the calculations are done.

STEP 6 : Calculation of Top R.L. of Head Wall :

i) Top R.L. of Head Wall = Dropped NBL + Pipe Dia. + Free Board
= 241.32 + 1.2 + 0.60
= 243.12 m
ii) Top R.L. of Head Wall = Avg G.L./ Bank Level + 0.30
= 244.055 + 0.30
= 244.355 m
Hence adopt Top RL of Head Wall = 244.355 m [ Maximum of i), ii) or iii) ]
Assume depth of foundation below CBL = 1.50 m
Height of Head Wall = 244.355 - 241.32 + 1.5
= 4.5350 > 4.00 m

Dropped NBL = CBL - Cushion over pipe - Diameter Of pipe - pipe thickness.
Assume Dia. Of pipe = 1200 mm
Min. Cushion = 0.60 m
pipe thk. = 70 mm
Pipe Bed slope 1 in = 250
Dropped NBL = 243.19 - 0.6 - 1.27

NBL at crossing = 243.105 m
NBL at crossing - Dropped NBL = 1.785 m
Hence 1.785 m DROP REQUIRED

It is proposed to provide ' Drop HPC ' at this RD . Accordingly the calculations are done.

STEP 6 : Calculation of Top R.L. of Head Wall :

i) Top R.L. of Head Wall = Dropped NBL + Pipe Dia. + Free Board
