Water pollution

Įžanga:
Water covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface and is a very important resource for people and the
environment. When it comes to water pollution in particular — whether it’s microplastics,
contaminants, or more — we’re faced with one question: how much of it is caused by human activity,
and what can we do about it?

Dėstymas:
So, water pollution occurs when harmful substances - often chemicals or disease - causing microorganisms
- pollute the body of water: such as stream, river, ocean, aquifer, degrading water quality and rendering it
toxic to humans or the environment.
Water pollution is sometimes caused by nature, but the most common cause of poor-quality water is
human activity and its consequences, which I will now go on to explain and give some examples:
 Global warming. Rising global temperature caused by CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions heat the
water, reducing its oxygen content.
 Next is Deforestation
 Industry, industrial waste, livestock farming
 Marine Dumping. The process of marine dumping is exactly what it sounds like, dumping
garbage into the waters of the ocean.
 And finally, Transport, because much of the plastic pollution in the ocean comes from fishing
boats, tankers and cargo shipping.

To put it bluntly: Water pollution kills. In fact, it caused 1.8 million deaths in 2015. Contaminated water
can also make you ill. Every year, unsafe water sickens about 1 billion people. And low-income
communities are disproportionately at risk because their homes are often closest to the most polluting
industries. Litter, sewage, plastic and other pollutants not just ruin the beauty of the beach or nature. They
are closing down coastal areas, kills fish, birds, marine mammals and sea turtles, destroys habitats and
even affects animals’ mating rituals, which can have devastating consequences and can wipe out entire
species.

So, what should we do to prevent water pollution?

 Recycle plastic;
 Pick up litter and throw it away in a garbage can.
 Properly dispose of chemical cleaners, oils, and non-biodegradable items to keep them from
ending up down the drain;

 Compost grass;

 Maintain our car so it doesn’t leak oil or antifreeze;

 And there are a lot of other things;

In the future water pollution will intensify and become a serious threat to sustainable development. Many
freshwater fauna and flora will disappear because of the hight level water pollution. But there is some
good news too, leaders from 70 countries signed a voluntary pledge in September to reverse biodiversity
loss which included a goal to stop plastic entering the ocean in 2050.

Išvados:

To sum up, water pollution is a serious environmental issue that can be caused by many contaminants.
Human health can be affected by consuming, entering, or washing in polluted water.

There are various ways to help to limit water pollution. So, I hope that we will all prevent it and help
nature, not pollute it.
