Lab Task :
Practice the construction of straight through cable and cross over cable
and verify the connection with LAN cable tester.
Solution:
UTP Cable:
UTP cable are used to create the electric circuit between nodes i.e., to
transfer data between devices.
A UTP cable contains 8 wires. These wires are grouped in four pairs.
Each pair consist of two twisted wires.
The following image shows a UTP cable.

RJ-45 Connector:
For the construction of straight-through cable and cross over cable, a
connector known as the RJ-45 connector is used.
The RJ-45 connector has eight physical locations, known as pin
positions or simply pins, into which the eight wires of the UTP cable can
be inserted.
Procedure of construction of straight through cable:
 Gather the necessary tools and materials, including a crimping
tool, RJ-45 connectors, and a twisted-pair Ethernet cable.
 Strip approximately 1 inch of the outer jacket from the end of the
cable using a wire stripper.
 Separate the four twisted pairs of wires inside the cable and
untwist each pair.
 We made sure that each side has wire arrangement with same
colour specified that should be connected to each pin on the RJ-45
connector on both side.
 Trim the wires so that they are all even in length and insert them
into the RJ-45 connector in the correct order.

 Use a crimping tool to crimp the connector onto the cable, ensuring
that all wires are securely connected.
 To verify the connection of the straight-through cable we
constructed, we pluged one end of the cable into the transmit jack
on the tester.

 And we pluged the other end of the cable into the receive jack on
the tester.
 Then we turned on the tester and saw all lights turning on during
the cycle.
Result:
The straight-through cable connections was successful because all of the
lights on the tester illuminated.
Procedure of construction of Cross over cable:
 Gather the necessary tools and materials, including a crimping
tool, RJ-45 connectors, and a twisted-pair Ethernet cable.
 Strip approximately 1 inch of the outer jacket from the end of the
cable using a wire stripper.
 Separate the four twisted pairs of wires inside the cable and
untwist each pair.

 Unlike Straight-through cable, cross over cable uses two different

wiring standards on both end
 The wires that come out of connector A should match the proper
pin at connector B, and the wires that come out of connector B
should match the correct pin at connector A.
 Pin 1 on connector A connects to Pin 3 on connector B, Pin 2 to
Pin 6, Pin 3 to Pin 1, and Pin 6 to Pin 2, and so on.
 Trim the wires so that they are all even in length and insert them
into the RJ-45 connector in the correct order.
 Crimp the connection onto the cable with a crimping tool to ensure
that all wires are properly attached.
 To test the connection of the Cross over cable we built, we plugged
one end of the cable into the tester's transmit socket.
 Then we plugged the other end of the wire into the receive jack on
the tester, switched it on, and observed all of the lights turn on
during the cycle.

Result:
Because all of the lights on the tester lighted, the cross over cable
connections was successful.
