REPORTED STATEMENTS
USE FORM
to report or describe statements that someone [main clause + (that) + noun clause]
else said
Note: We do not need to make any changes to the verb tense or modal when we report
a scientific fact or when something is still true.
Example:
“I hate strawberries,” said Lisa Lisa said she hates strawberries.
“Minh is the new president of the club,” said Lisa. Lisa said that Minh is the new
president of the club.
ADVERB CHANGES
REPORTED QUESTIONS
USE FORM
to say what someone else asked [main clause + if or Wh-word + noun clause]
Example:
“How many products do you order?”, asked Lisa.
Lisa asked me how many products I ordered.
“Did you go to the party last night?”, asked Lisa.
Lisa asked me if I had gone to the party the previous night.
• We change the structure of a question into that of a statement.
• We use the same rules regarding tense, pronoun, and time and place word/
phrases changes with reported questions as we do with reported statements.
• We use if for Yes/No questions and use Wh-words (what, where, when, how…)
for Wh-questions.
