MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

CODE : DJM30073

EXPERIMENT :4

TITLES : Serial and Parallel In Shift Register

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. To learn how to connect a 4 Bit serial In/Parallel Out (SIPO) and Parallel In/Parallel Out
(PIPO) register.
2. To observe the characteristic of shift register.

EQUIPMENTS/APPARATUS:
1. Digital logic tutor CMOS/TTL DESIGNER
2. IC 7474 x 2pcs
3. Wire connector / jumper wire

THEORY:

Registers are required in digital systems for the temporary storage of a group of bits.
Data bits traveling through a digital system sometimes have to be temporarily stopped,
copied, moved or even shifted to the right or left one or more positions. A shift register
facilitates this movement and storage of data bits. Most shift registers can handle parallel
movement of data bits, as well as serial movement and can also be used to convert from
parallel to serial and serial to parallel.

SAFETY AND HEALTH:

Students must be careful to use the electrical equipment and apparatus to be used in
the laboratory and shall meet local safety standards and regulations e.g. Safety Mark

DISCUSSION/QUESTION:
1. A 4-bit 1101 is serially entered (right-most bit first) in sequence into 4-bit parallel
out shift register that is initially clear. Draw the truth table that shows the Q
outputs after four clock pulses.

2. Explain the advantages of Parallel In / Parallel Out (PIPO) over Serial In / Parallel
Out (SIPO).
