THE THEORY OF SUSTAINABLE SOCIOCULTURAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
By: M. Rabie, A Theory of Sustainable Sociocultural and Economic Development

Development is the basic societal process to move the underdeveloped nations from their
state of economic backwardness and slow sociocultural change to a dynamic state
characterized by sustained economic growth and sociocultural and political
transformation that improves the quality of life of all members of society.
People became the major agents of development of development and the main
beneficiaries of change produced by development.
Joseph Stiglitz argues that development is about transforming the lives of people, not just
economically for development involves every aspects of society they engage and the efforts of
everyone like market, government, NGOS, cooperatives and not -for profit institution.
THE MEANING OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

It is a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of
the future generation to meet their own needs.

Sustainable development is way of organizing society so that it can exist in the long term.

This would mean taking into account both the imperatives present and those of the future,
such as the prevention of the environment and natural resources or social economic equity.

Sustainable means that which can be maintained for a period of time, while development is
any sign of progress or improvement.
Ecological Footprints in Achieving Sustainable
Development
Ecological footprints represents the maximum limit of consumption per person according to
earths ecological capacity.

But because of the human's demand for ecological resources in a given year has been
exceeding what the planet can regenerates in that same year, man keep the ecological
resources deficit.

This is the result of using more of the ecological resources than the planet could provide.

Man's consumption habit at present are a big threat to sustainable development.

Brundtland 1987- defined Sustainable development as the human ability to ensure that the
current development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the
future generation to meet their own needs.

World Commission on the Environment and Development defined sustainable development

has limitations for the present state of technology and social organization on environmental
resources, together with the limited ability of the biosphere to absorb the effects of human
activities impose limitations on sustainable development.
System-oriented and integrated approach in the analysis and solution of problems
1. A concern for meeting the needs of future generation; otherwise termed as inter-generation equity;

2. A concerned to exceed the carrying capacity of ecosystem; living on the interest rather than on the
capital or stock of natural resources, maintenance or strengthen of vital ecosystem function in every
development activity.

3. A concern for resource use efficiency; promotion of research on substitutes, recycling, exploration, etc.
From revenue derived from the utilization of nonrenewable resources a recognition that poverty is both
a cause and consequences of environmental degradation.

4. A concern for equity of people access to natural resources; promotion of citizens participation and
decentralization in implementing programs. For traditional Economics Development cannot step upward
in the socio- economic ladder of a country for development is exploitation of resources; thus tress are
cut, mountains are mined, and waters are fished for profit. Modern mindset about development is all
about the relationship of the human kind and the environment.....the earth was created for human
convenience, human aggrandizement and glorification, is the rationale for the earth's existence;
competitive relationships and adversarial concentration are the most productive means by which
individuals, group, and the nations prosper money is the basic resources and all aspects of the
environment must be organized to further its production and accumulation.
