Effect of Bagasse ash and Natural sand on strength characteristics of Expansive soil; In case of Dukem
Town
Statement of the Problem/Background of the research:
Construction on expansive soils has made problems for civil engineering projects in the world. Such as like
highways, railways, embankments, and foundations. In some situation, construction on such type of soil cannot
be avoided, and the sources of suitable materials may not be near to the site, and transportation of them
become costly and time consuming. A large part of Dukem town is also covered by expansive soil and it
affects the stability of many light weight structures, residential buildings, and roads. Most of them are failed
before their design life completion. Therefore, the strength improvement of such type of soil is important. For
reducing transportation of selected material cost and to reduce damages. From which bagasse ash and natural
sand are more important. Limited researches have been done in the stabilization of expansive soil using the
combined effect of mechanical and chemical stabilization techniques. Therefore, on the combined effect of
bagasse ash and natural sand to improve the strength characteristics of the expansive soil will have
investigated.

Research Objective:
The main objective of this research work is to improve the strength properties of expansive soil using bagasse
ash and natural sand.
Rational/Significance of the research:
This study will help us use locally available material bagasse ash and natural sand as soil stabilization for
reducing cost and protecting the environment especially for road construction and lightweight structures on
expansive soils. It will also be help full in the reduction of industrial waste materials and utilizing natural sand
as an improvement in the strength characteristics of expansive soil.

Methodology: (Clearly state the research method and/ approach that you will follow)
To complete the research work experimental method of study will be followed which include:-
 Collection of sample from the site.
 Preparation of samples for each laboratory test.
 Laboratory test to characterize natural untreated soil.
 Laboratory test of fiber and sand treated soil at different percentage of bagasse ash and natural sand to
determine optimum fiber and sand content
 Laboratory test of soil with optimum bagasse ash and natural sand content.
