Valve Management
Series 4 Controller
for Steam Turbines
The Series 4 Valve Management Controller is designed to
provide precise, sophisticated valve management for virtually any
steam turbine. The Valve Management Controller offers an
impressive list of standard functions, including:
PID ■ Fully-Integrated Valve Control
■ Loss Of Load Protection
■ Valve Calibration and Characterization
A/D
■ Valve Testing
■ Single or Sequential (Hybrid) Valve Modes
The Valve Management Controller is optionally available with
high-speed valve position control.
As an Application Function Module in the Series 4 family of
turbomachinery control products, the Valve Management
Controller offers the added benefit of easy integration with other
Application Function Modules, including the Series 4 Speed
Controller and the Series 4 Autosynchronization Controller.
RAM Fully-Integrated Valve Control
Throttle valves, governor valves, reheat stop valves, and
intercept valves are all automatically controlled in a fully-
integrated turbine control scheme. This enhanced control
reduces turbine trips while increasing turbine protection by more
precisely regulating turbine operation.
Loss of Load Protection
The Valve Management Controller provides protection for the
turbine from sudden changes in load through a variety of rapid-
response algorithms. These algorithms can be configured to
meet installation-specific requirements.
Valve Calibration and Characterization
The Valve Management Controller offers powerful calibration and
characterization functions to tailor the controller’s response to the
turbine’s control valve characteristics. The operation of each
throttle valve and governor valve may be optimized with individ-
ual valve-specific data. In addition to manual valve calibration,
the Controller also incorporates a sophisticated valve character-
izer function for automatic characterization of the governor
valves. This automatic characterization uses advanced curve-fit
techniques to ensure that the valve positions

valve as well as the steam valve. Multiple positioner control
packages may be used, depending on the number of valves to be
controlled.
Total Train Control ® Systems
The Series 4 Valve Management Controller is designed around
the concept of a Total Train Control (TTC) system. A TTC system
provides an integrated approach to control for an entire
turbomachinery train or network of trains; it also provides fully-
integrated system start-up and shutdown, decoupling of control
loops, and load-sharing algorithms for multimachine networks.
The advantages of such a system are repeatable start-ups,
tighter control, prevention of trips due to adverse control loop
interactions, and improved energy savings.
