1 Field of application
Rectangular xings according to this standard apply to uses in mechanical
engineering. Rectangular rings with ring widths I and Iz shall be used by
preference; rectangular rings of greater ring widths according to Appendix
A shall be reserved, in particular as replacements for piston rings in
machines of older design. Rectangular rings for vehicle manufacture (see DIN
180 6622 Part 1)shall be used for reciprocating piston engines with a cylinder
diameter of between 30 and 200 mn.

4 Intermediate sizes
Intermediate sizes for nominal diameter d, (repair sizes) are permissible.
The table values for the next smaller nominal diameter (with the exception of
inside diameter q,) shall be applied.
Designation of a rectangular ring with nominal diameter d, = 231 mm (repair
size), ring width h, = 4 mm made from spheroidal graphite cast iron (66), minimum
gap 0.6 mm (87), inside chamfered edge (RI), chromium-coated periphery with a

Amendments
The following amendments have been made to the September 1990 edition:
- Inclusion of piston rings with greater ring widths I and II from the
previous standard DIN 24 910 Part 1, March 1960 edition
- ‘The text of the standard has been revised.DIN 34 110
Explanatory notes
During the revision of the standards on piston rings for mechanical engineering
and in particular DIN 24 910 Part 1 on rectangular rings, a series of amendments
were made which take into account the technical developments in engine
manufacture. Among other things, the ving widths, being essential functional
criteria, have been reduced.
To meet the requirement for exchangeability of piston rings, whieh are wearing
parte and frequently replaced during the often long life of a machine,
exchangeable sizes must romain available. Up to new, in such cases orders were
made in accordance with DIN 24 910 Part 1, March 1960 edition, which has since
been replaced by DIN 34 110. However, in crder to ensure that piston rings which
are ordered as a replacement for such, in accordance with DIN 24 910 Part 1 ~
i.e. with greater ring widths, comply with the findings and quality requivements,
DIN 34 110 has been expanded by the insertion of table 3 with piston rings of
greater ring widths, as in the previous standacd DIN 24 910 Part 1.
