(Q2_LP 1)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS:

Human body is composed of different major organs which

perform important functions. These are the bones, muscles, stomach,
intestines, kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, and brain.

Bones provide support for our bodies and help

form our shape. Although they are light, bones
are strong enough to support our entire weight.
They protect delicate organs in the body. The
skull helps protect the brain. The backbones
protect the spinal cord. The ribs form a protective
cage around the heart and lungs. The pelvic

bones support our body when we sit.

Muscles form the fleshy parts of the body. They

enable our body to move. They also give shape
and forms to our body. Muscles are voluntary or
involuntary. Voluntary muscles are muscles that
you can control, like your arms, legs, face
muscles, etc. Involuntary muscles are controlled
by nervous system like the smooth muscles in the
walls of the stomach, esophagus, diaphragm, and

2
Stomach is a sack-like container of food made
from involuntary muscles. It contracts and relaxes
to digest food. Foods are squeezed, churned, and
twisted in the stomach. Food stays in the stomach
stays for four hours until the food turns into a thick
liquid. Stomach contains digestive juices like

pepsin to make digestion fast.

1.

Intestines are a long, continuous tube running

from the stomach to the anus. The small intestine
is about 2.5 cm wide, and 7 m long coiled which
contains digestive juices and other enzymes that
completely digests food and absorbs digested
nutrients. The large intestine is about 1.5 m long
which absorbs water and salts from the material
that has not been digested as food and get rid of https://www.vectorstock.com/royalty-free-vector/human-

any waste products left over. 2.

Kidneys are bean-shaped paired organs which

are about 4 to 5 inches long and 2 to 3 inches
wide. The kidneys remove urea from the blood
through tiny filtering units called nephrons. They
perform two major functions in the urinary
system. First, they remove liquid waste from the
blood in the form of urine. Second, they also
keep a stable balance of salts and other

substances in the blood and produce a hormone
that aids the formation of blood cells.

Liver is a large meaty organ that sits just under

your rib cage on the right side of your abdomen.
It regulates most chemical levels in the blood and
excretes a product called bile. This helps carry
away waste products from the liver. All the blood
leaving the stomach and intestines passes
through the liver. The liver processes this blood
and breaks down, balances, and creates the https://www.vectorstock.com/royalty-free-vector/liver-

are easier to use for the rest of the body or that

are nontoxic.

3
Heart is a hollow muscular organ located between
lungs and it is protected by the ribcage. It is about the
size of your fist and located in the middle of the chest
cavity. The beating of the heart is due to the
contraction of your heart muscles. The cardiac
muscles are contracting involuntarily. It continues to

while we are sleeping.

Lungs are pyramid-shaped, paired organs

located on either side of the chest. Their main
function is exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide
with the blood. The lungs filter the oxygen that
enters our body because it contains a filtering
structure to ensure that the heart receives clean
oxygen from the lungs. The carbon dioxide as a
waste material of the body is removed from the https://www.vectorstock.com/royalty-free-vector/lung-

body through the lungs.

Brain is a highly complex organ of human beings.
It weighs about 1.5 kilograms and contains
billions of neurons. It controls the involuntary
activities of the body like thinking, solving
problems, and memorizing details and decision
making. It controls the muscle movement of the
body like walking and writing. It coordinates

SCIENCE 4
(Q2_LP2)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS:

You have learned in the previous lesson the different major

organs in the human body and their specific functions. These major
organs work together to make the body function properly. For example,
muscles and bones work in pairs to make our body move.

https://bio.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Introductory_and_General_Biology/Book%3A_Introductory_Biology_(CK-12)/13%3A_Human_Biology/13.16%3A_Skeletal_Muscles

The muscles are attached to the bones by tough connective

tissues called tendons. Many muscles are attached to the ends of
bones that meet at a joint. When the muscles contract, they pull on the
bones, causing them to move. Our joints and muscles allow our bones
to move.

In the succeeding activities, you are expected to communicate

how major organ is connected to another major organ to work or

function properly in the body. Use what you have learned about the
specific functions of the different major organs.

villi of the small intestines; and the oxygen which came from the
lungs, will be pumped by the heart to the different parts of the body
in order to function properly.

SCIENCE 4
(Q2_LP3)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS:

Plants are everywhere. They play a vital role in the community.

They are the silent workers of our planet. Plants provide us with clean
air, fresh water, healthy food, and a number of things. Plants are a
major factor in all phases of a living bygones life; be it small or big,
young or old, or living on land or it water.
Plants are classified according to their habitat: terrestrial and
aquatic. Plants that grow on land are called Terrestrial Plants or Land
Plants. The term terrestrial came from a Latin root terra, which means
"earth, land”. Most of the Terrestrial plants have stomata on the
bottoms of their leaves and have long roots. The roots of terrestrial
plants are planted deeply in the soil. These roots help to stabilize the
plants and draw minerals and any needed moisture from the soil.
These plants can't survive if immersed or submerged in water as they'll
become waterlogged and die.

15
Plants that grow in water are called Aquatic Plants. They are
called Aquatic because they live in or under water and the term aquatic
itself means ‘water’. Aquatic plants have their leaves near or under the
water. Plants that live completely under water obtain carbon dioxide
from the water. When they release oxygen tiny air bubbles can be
gathering around them. These plants have short but branched out roots
which allows them to float under or over the water. Some of the
examples include lotus, water hyacinth.

d=vfe&ved=0CAsQjRxqFwoTCJiV2J_cp_ICFQAAAAAdAAAAABAK

In environments where heavy rain or flooding is common, plants

that can survive both dry or wet conditions straddle the line between
aquatic and terrestrial. There are terrestrial plants that can survive
periods of heavy rain or waterlogging and still survive; however, these
wouldn't be considered aquatic plants. Many species of terrestrial
plants can tolerate submersion or inundation of water for a short period,
but prolonged exposure often results in death.
There are many similarities between aquatic and terrestrial
plants. Both varieties of the plant are green, with leaves, roots and the
ability to flower. Land plants are typically taller than wide and have a
branched root system. Water plants are typically wider and have
spongier leaves, which allow the plant to float on water. Aquatic plants
don't root down into the soil. Their roots hang in the water and they're
able to move around.
Specialized structures are important to plants in order to adapt to
their environment. Thorns and hairs are examples of specialized
structures among some plants. The water lily has thick and buoyant
leaves while lotus leaves are flat and broad. Water lilies have wide flat
leaves that help distribute weight over a large area thus helping them

16
float. The water hyacinth has long roots so that they can reach the soil
under the water. Knowing its unique structures is amazing! Growing
them in our backyard would be easier if we are familiar with their
characteristics.
This learning packet was designed and written for you to help you
master the characteristics and specialized structures of terrestrial and
aquatic plants. Get ready because you will enter “Plants’ Kingdom”.
Have fun and enjoy the activities provided just for you.
