PROJECT TITLE

To determine the minimum costs of materials

to create a clothing barrel with a fixed volume.
PURPOSE/INTRODUCTION

A shipping company called Trini-Bay realizes that using

boxes to ship large amounts of items takes up a lot of storage
which can be costly. They thought about using a more reliable
way to ship orders with a lot of items. They decided to produce
clothing barrels which has a large volume than the boxes to
accommodate for these large orders. They also planned on
finding the least expensive materials to make the barrels. At the
end, they created a barrel with affordable materials and
dimensions which could have maximum capacity for shipping.
The purpose of this project is to find the minimum cost of
materials needed to create a clothing barrel that costs $2 per
cm2 for the covers and $1 per cm2 for the cylindrical structure.
MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION

Variables:
r = radius of circle
h = height of cylinder
v = volume of cylinder
s = surface area
π = pi (3.14)
a = area of circle
v = volume ( 64πcm3)
w = width
l = length

Volume of Cylinder = Area of Circle × Height of Cylinder

= πr2 × h
= πr2h
Volume of Clothing Barrel = 64πcm3
∴ h = 64/r2
PROBLEM SOLUTION
Volume= πr2h
64π=πr2
64/r2= h

SA = 2πr2+ 2πrh
C = 4πr2+ 2πrh
= 4πr2+ 2πr(64/r2)
= 4πr2+ 128π/r
dc/dr = 4πr2 + 128πr-1
dc/dr = 8πr - 128πr-2
dc/dr = 0
8πr - 128πr-2 = 0
8πr = 128π/r2
8r = 128/r2
8r3 = 128
r3 = 128/8
r = √ 16
3

r = 2.52 cm
d2c/dr = 8πr - 128πr-2
= 8π + 256r-3
= 8π + 256π(2.52)-3
= 25.12 + 50.24
= 75. 36 (minimum point)

Cost to make materials:

C = 4πr2 + 128π/r
= 4π(2.52)2 + 128π/2.52
= 79. 76 + 159. 50
= $239.26
