High temperature silicone hoses explained
Standard automotive silicone hoses (also known as auto silicone hoses) use standard silicone materials
offers continuous operating temperature -55°C to +180°C built with reinforcement layers of Polyester
fabric. In certain applications this temperature rating is not sufficient and the hose specification calls for
something more resistant to higher operating temperatures.
Longsun silicone hose offers from stock just about every single shape and size silicone hose imaginable
with polyester reinforcements for temperatures of up to 180°C. We also make to order silicone hoses
which can withstand much higher operating temperatures of up to 220°C. This is achieved by embedding
multiple layers (plies) of specialist high temperature fabric to replace the polyester. This man made
reinforcement fabric is known as an Aramid fabric.
Longsun silicone hose uses an Aramid fabric brand called Nomex which is of excellent quality and an
inherently flame-resistant, high-temperature fiber that will not melt, drip or support combustion in air. In
the engine bay, it also delivers outstanding resistance to high temperature applications such as those
feeding hot air to inlet manifolds. Nomex reinforced hoses are best suited where ;high temperatures are a
concern, and is an excellent upgrade to the Polyester reinforcements where a more reliable connection is
required, in particular for high performance, and demanding applications.
Cost implications of Nomex

Nomex is a high specification material and fabric used in hundreds of applications other than making
hoses, it is used for example to make race driver suits, fire fighter suits, aerospace and much more. We
purchase the Nomex material my the square meter supplied onto a 50 or 100 meter roll, compared to
polyester fabric Nomex can be about four to six times the cost of polyester fabric.
This therefore has an impact on hose price. A Nomex hose will typically add 80% to the cost of a silicone
hose compared to polyester.

VMQ (Silicone)
Silicone is a resilient material and can withstand extreme environments; operating temperatures are
between –65°C and 200°C. Silicone hose is suitable for the transport of air, water, antifreeze solution,
coolant and many other fluids.
FVMQ (Flurosilicone)
Fluro-elastomers liners can be incorporated into the design of the hose to prolong the life expectancy
of the hose and offer resistance to harsh chemicals, oils and fuels. It also has excellent thermal stability
making it ideal for charge air cooler and turbo hoses. Suitable for OAT coolants.
Fire Retardent Silicone

Widely used in the rail industry, low-smoke low toxicity rubber is ideal for situations where the generation
of toxic gas and smoke needs to be restricted. The silicone is specially designed to not release hazardous
gases with minimal smoke and also to self extinguish.
FDA ApprovedSilicone
Food grade silicone is specially formulated for use with food products; it has reduced food taint and very
low bacteria build up, resulting ultimately in lower maintenancecosts.
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

A cost-effective solution for coolant and air hoses where there is a medium to high volume required. It
has excellent UV resistance and can be formulated to withstand 130°C. Peroxide cure offers better heat
resistance and sulphur cure gives higher tensile and tear strength.
NBR (Nitrile Rubber)

Nitrile is mainly used for fuel filler, oil reservoir hoses and power assisted steering systems. Suited best to
medium and large batchruns.
AEM (EthyleneAcrylate)
AEM Rubber has excellent oil resistance at high temperature whilst still maintaining low temperature
flexibility. It is best suited for medium to large batch runs and used for de-aeration hoses and certain
charge air coolant systems.
FKM (Flurocarbon Rubber)

FKM has the greatest resistance properties of all rubbers currently available; offering a wide range of
chemical compatibility, temperature range, low compression set, impermeability and excellent aging
characteristics.
ECO (Epichlorohydrin Rubber)

ECO is the modern alternative for PVC/NBR with greater heat resistance upto 130° constant service
temperature with the added advantages of improved ozone and acid resistance.

How do you cut a silicone hose
There are situations where you may want to cut a silicone hose to make it smaller. It is
essential that you do this in the right way to give a good finish and you do not compromise
the efficiency of thehose.
There are right and wrong ways to cut silicone hoses, the correct way will depend on the
hose size that you are working with. There are many questions we often get asked which
we have answeredbelow:
HOW DO YOU CUT SMALL DIAMETER UNREINFORCED HOSES ORTUBING?

For unreinforced silicone tubing up to around 8mm you can simply cut the tube with wire
cutters, pliers or scissors.
HOW DO YOU CUT SMALL DIAMETER REINFORCED SILICONEHOSES?
Small diameter reinforced silicone hoses can be cut with a parcel knife or Stanley blade.
You should always ensure you use a brand new blade and please watch your fingers. This
method with work on up to 25mm diameter hoses. When cutting do not roll the hose as you
risk cutting youfingers.
CAN YOU USE AHACK SAW TO CUT SILICONEHOSES?

Never use a hacksaw for any diameter hose this will create frayed material and debris
insidehoses.
CAN YOU USE A VICE TO HOLD MY HOSE WHILST CUTTING?

If you have a vice this will make securing small hoses easier and therefore can be used for small projects. We

do not advise using a vice for larger hoses as the hose will deform and move, the result will be a ruined hose.
HOW DO YOU CUT LARGE DIAMETER SILICONEHOSES?
We will take you through the step by step process of successfully cutting large diameter silicone hoses with
goodresults.
You will need: T bolt hose clamp to suit the size of hose, A spanner for the clamp and a Stanley knife with a
brand newblade.
1.Mark the hose to cut with a permanent marker.
2.Line up the clamp, tighten and secure.
3.Keep your fingers away. Now slowly use the edge of the clamp as a cutting guide. Cut along until you reach
the bridge of theclamp.
4.When you reach the bridge of the clamp, you will loose that line. Rotate and readjust the clamp to get that
straightline.
5.Cut some more until the entire diameter is cut.
6.Remove the clamp and admire your job.
Need to shorten yoursiliconehose?
If your silicone hose is too long you can easily make it shorter. Using this metod the cut will both straight and
good-looking. Be careful so you don 't cut yourself on the knife!

Meassure how much you need to shorten the hose. Mark on both sides of the hose.

In order to select the correct hose, measure the outer diameter (OD) of the pipe you want to
connect it to. This will be the same as the Internal Diameter of the silicone hose. Forexample
if the outer diameter of the pipe is 76mm then you needto choose a silicone hose with a
76mm internal diameter (ID).
