The ecosystems

Romania has a wide variety of natural and semi-natural ecosystems covering approximately 47% of
the country's land area 1. There are nearly 10,000 km (3,900 square miles) (about 5% of the total
area) of protected areas in Romania covering 13 national parks and three biosphere reserves1.
Some of Romania's most notable ecosystems are:

Forests: Forests cover more than a quarter of Romania's territory and are home to a wide variety
of animal and plant species.

Danube Delta: The Danube Delta is a refuge for thousands of migratory and native birds, as well as
more than 160 varieties of fish, such as sturgeons, eels, pike or carp.

Mountains: Romania's mountains, such as the Carpathians, are home to a wide variety of animal
and plant species, including bears, wolves, lynx, chamois, roe deer, fallow deer, wild boar,
mountain roosters, pheasants, and hares.

Climate

Romania's climate is typically humid continental, although it is noticeably milder than the countries
to the west, and with certain Mediterranean overtones. The country has four distinct seasons:
spring, summer, autumn and Winter. The country's geographical features also influence the climate
in most regions.
