Project 2 Guidelines and Rubric

For Project 2, please re-read Chapter 10 in the textbook and do Project 10-19. You will create all the part files of the
assembly shown in project 10-19, the assembly file of the assembly, a motion study showing the gears working, and an
exploded isometric drawing of the assembly with a bill of materials in the drawing. You will not need to create
dimensioned drawings of each part. This project might take more than 10 hours so don’t procrastinate on this one.
You are not allowed to get help from anyone (instructors, graders, friends, tutors, etc) on this project except for creating
the gears (only) from the Design Library’s Toolbox. The graders may answer questions about creating gears from the
Design Library’s Toolbox.
What you will turn in:

• 7 Part Files (3 shafts, 2 gear housing parts, 1 gasket, 1 lubricating nipple)

• 1 Assembly File with exploded view configuration and motion study showing a top view of the gears moving. You
can make the gear housing transparent so the gears are visible.
• 1 Drawing File of the exploded assembly with a bill of materials and balloons showing which part is what like the
one shown on page 683.

There are a few dimension changes listed below. The grading rubric is on the last page.
For the lubrication nipple, please sketch a circle on the top face of the hexagon feature and use it along with the loft
feature to create a loft between the round nipple and the top face of the hexagon. Please note the Start and End
constraints in the picture and follow that. Face1 is the bottom, flat face of the nipple and Sketch5 is the circle (11 mm
diameter) sketch.

For both of the gears, the Module (M) is 2 and the Pressure Angle is 20. There are 80 teeth in the large gear and 30 teeth
in the small gear. You will need to set the Hub Style to One Side and edit all the values to get the correct gear. Also,
please edit the Keyway option and choose Rectangular(1). Also, please don’t try to put the M6x1 – 6H holes in the sides
of the gear hubs shown in the textbook. (Just ignore it, life will be so much easier if you use keyways instead.) You don’t
need to make parallel keys as described on pages 647 to 651, just pretend those exist in the assembly. You will still need
to mate your keyways so that when the large gear in the middle rotates, the small gear in the middle rotates with the
large gear. Re-read pages 626 to 627 if you are still confused about the terminology and options when using the toolbox
to create the gears. Paired with what’s given in the textbook, you should be able to easily create the gears. For the
bushings, please use the “Thrust Ball Bearing - AFBMA 24.1.5 Light Series”. You will need to use common sense to
figure out what size bearing to use. All four gears need to be mated correctly so that they all spin in the right direction
and angular velocity relative to each other.

More clarifications below!

Please use the shaft dimensions in the following picture instead of the ones shown in the textbook.
Below shows the placement of the gears, shafts, and bearings. The orangish brown part in the assembly is the gasket,
which separates the two gear housing parts. The thickness of the gasket is 5mm. Please note that the picture doesn’t
show screws securing the top housing to the bottom housing. You will still need to add those in, otherwise you will lose
points.
