Construction Around University of North Dakota Campus Slowly Comes to an End

With construction of the Memorial Union going on in campus since summer of 2019, the new
Memorial Union is coming closer to being finished.
When the demolition of the area (which lasted around three months) ended,
construction swiftly started in building the new Memorial Union that includes many new study
areas, places to eat, large ballroom, and outdoor spaces for students. The building is currently
now open to students and faculty while finishing touches are being made. Students and faculty
can make requests to reserve rooms and areas in the building ahead of time on the new
Memorial Union website.
Another steady area of construction on campus is the road work on University Avenue
and Columbia Road. The road construction began May 10 and was scheduled to be done before
first day of classes but got pushed back to end of fall.
The road construction can be difficult for students as many detours, driving and walking,
must be taken to get to classes and other buildings on campus. The construction includes
redoing both the east and west lanes and one of the parking lots on the east side of Columbia
Road.
Although most of the academic buildings are on the west side of Columbia Road, many
off-campus students must use that road to get to campus, meaning they are having to take
detours. On top of the detours, traffic has seemed to increase as more students have in person
classes this year. Students must allocate enough driving time to ensure they are not late to class
because of this.
More information about the new Memorial Union and road construction can be found
on UND’s website at http://blogs.und.edu/campus-renewal/.
