WORK EXPERIENCE
Forest Health Intern May 2023-August 2023
North Carolina Forest Service, Griffith Forestry Center, 2400 Old U.S. Hwy 70, Clayton, NC, 27520 ● Treated invasive insects and plants across North Carolina to protect threatened species, restore diminishing habitats, and prepare for timber harvests. ○ Utilized a Rainbow Quantum Micro Injector, Rainbow Q-Connect and soil drenching for Mectinite and Imidacloprid application for treatment of Agrilus planipennis and Adelgis tsugae. ● Trained to identify various commercially damaging insects, insect-disease complexes, and plant stress responses. ● Surveyed for the spread of Lycorma delicatula in Kernersville, North Carolina and reached out to landowners and community members to track new sightings and map points of interest. Undergraduate Research Assistant September 2021-May 2023 Precision Pest Ecology Lab, Research Annex West A, 3210 Ligon Street, Raleigh, 27606 ● Ran greenhouse experiments on Bt cotton to test resistance to insect damage and oviposition ○ Reared insect colonies of species such as Frankliniella fusca and Drosophila hydei for two years. ○ Measured oviposition rates of Frankliniella fusca on Bt cotton to determine resistance to oviposition in comparison to non-Bt cotton. ○ Utilized WinRHIZO software to scan hundreds of roots for assessing growth and damage. ● Advanced multiple projects regarding the trapping and identification of pest insects ○ Identified agricultural insect pests from farms across the Southeastern US under a microscope to monitor presence of pests at those sites ○ Rated corn and sweet potatoes for Helicoverpa zea and Elateridae damage ○ Set up insect traps to monitor Helicoverpa zea and Elateridae populations around field sites. ○ Collected varied species of stink bugs from 5 sites across North Carolina for use in a project studying effectivity of different pesticide application rates Undergraduate Intern May 2021-August 2021 Sustainable and Organic Soil Fertility Lab, Williams Hall, 101 Deriex, Raleigh, NC 27607 ● Aided in the maintenance and sample procession of varied soil fertility experiments across North Carolina ○ Maintained a high level of data and sample organization across thousands of samples measuring different interconnected variables such as biomass nitrogen concentration, plant available nitrogen in soil, soil bulk density, and concentration of weeds. ○ Collaborated with a team to maintain agricultural research sites in Kinston, Goldsboro, and Rocky Mount, North Carolina to USDA Organic standards. ○ Assessed bulk density and performed KCL extractions on thousands of soil samples ● Collected gas samples for an experiment observing the effects of varied soil management practices on nitrous oxide emissions ○ Prepared and used sampling equipment such as vacuum sealed vials and soil samplers ○ Oversaw the use of delicate equipment such as vacuum pumps and biomass grinders on a weekly basis SKILLS AND INTERESTS
