I. PRESENTATION
After the demand and for the account of the AXIAL bureau, the GERI study bureau has realized the
geotechnical study of the pre-launch, regarding the construction of a bridge on the Rembo Nkomi
River (Nyembe) by the petroleum company ADDAX.
The project is located at approximately 250 km SOUTH-EAST of Port Gentil and will allow to link
the two oil sites of TSIENGUI and OBANGUE.
Reference plan:
The site is relatively flat and partially occupied by the ADDAX installations during our intervention.
II. MISSIONS
GERI is in charge of the mission G12; in respect to the norm NF P94500 of geotechnical missions of
December 2006 presented in the appendix:
Mission G12: Geotechnical study before project launch.
The goal is to contribute to the elaboration of a pre-launched project, by defining the geotechnical
hypothesis and to take into account the general principals of construction, undertaken in geotechnical
activities.
References used:
PART N°62 - Title V December 1993, Technical rules of conception and calculation of foundations by
civil engineering works.
Any changes in implantation or regarding the importance of constructions hypothesis found during
the establishment of this study report, must be communicated to us and receive our written approval,
because these changes could modify the results of our study.
The project manager should make sure that he has given us enough accurate information for the
sounding implantation.
The Project site is located on the Southern Coast of Gabon; at about a hundred kilometers North East
of the city Omboue. The site is identified as being part of the Madila formation group, formed
essentially with fine subordinated sandstone and of marls.
Red detrital soils are essentially present. The relief is not that complex and the ground water is
generally slightly deep.

III. RECONNAISSANCE
The reconnaissance program after concerting with the client consists of executing the following
activities:
Twenty six (26) soundings with a penetrometer of heavy dynamic; conducted to a depth of
15 m or by refusal. Their annotation is from SPL1 to SPL26 .
Considering that the trial points 21 to 26 have been added to the original contract following the
project sliding.
Five (5) core drillings at a 20 m depth together with pressiometrical trials on every 1,00 m,
done under high pressure, into bed rock and constant extractions of samples of crumb
formation in the rock eventually.
Considering that a complementary sounding (SC1B) is done as a complement of the 4 that were
programmed on the contract for the same reasons cited previously.
We have to remind
The dynamic penetration trial allows us to measure the appearing dynamic resistance of the
soil in accordance to the depth by dynamic insertion of a drill pipe with a 50 kg mutton. When
refusal is obtained; it indicates a site presenting a resistance to penetrometrical stamping, superior to
50 Mpa.
The geological sounding allows us to establish, with accuracy, the nature and the thickness of
layers of the soil that is being prospected.
For each type of soil encountered; the pressiometrical trial helps us define the following
mechanical characteristics: Pressure limits (P1); Creep pressure (Pf) and pressiometrical module (E).
Observations:
The depth of the different lithological elements is defined according to existing natural level of the
landscape existing at the time of reconnaissance (May 2011).
The thickness of noted resistance is the one measured by the sounding authorization; and can
encounter fluctuations between these points.
Penetrometrical trials can`t give precise lithology; because not done after sampling.
4.1. Topography
On the right bank of the river the site is relatively flat and evolves between dimension 5and 6.
On the left bank of the river; it is also flat and evolves between the dimension 9 and 10 with a slight
lower down on the alignment of points 11; 12 and 13 of dimension 7, 5.
5.2 Penetrometry
Details in the penetrometrical diagram are presented in accordance to the different banks on the
appendix.
The trials have been conducted to a depth of 13 to 15 meters deep; without encountering any refusal.

We have also noticed that the formations encountered are
extremely clayey; up to 20 m (see chapter 5.4).
5.3 Hydrogeology:
When it`s measurable from within the cavity left by the penetrometer pipe (sliding can occur
particularly on sandy soils); the level of water raises up.
At present times; that level couldn`t be identified but is on our belief not deep.
Remarks:
The reconnaissance soundings are done on short term duration.
The presence or non-presence of water at a given level at the time of the soundings doesn`t give us
any indications of fluctuations.
The origin of possible fluctuation is of natural source (rise in the water level in relation to the
meteorology); either caused by activities or a modification of the neighboring environment
(pumping, refusals, dam effect…)
We can also note:
- The risk of swimming pool effect linked to a presence of permeable materials in a permeable
environment.
- Circulation strongly conditioned by meteorology.
The definition of the level of the ground water results from the realization of a piezometer and by the
observation of fluctuations over many months concerning the studied case ; presently the use of a
piezometer hasn`t been applied.

On the right bank the results are homogeneous; but present poor geotechnical characteristics up to 10 m
deep. Above that; we encounter a sand formation moderately compact to compact.
On the left bank; the encountered formation is exclusively clayish and measured characteristics are very
heterogeneous and generally weak to medium.
We preconize consequently deep foundations of beaten post or drilled post with concrete eventually
reinforced with a big diameter.
The defining of these foundations comes essentially after study of the project (geometry; altimetry) and
of necessary charges.
To illustrate that statement; we would like to demonstrate with a simulation for posts of 20 ml on the
right bank; neutralizing the two first meters and for different diameters.
Thus:

On the left bank and considering the heterogeneous geotechnical performances that are modest to a 20
ml depth; it is necessary to do at least one sounding, complementary to a 30 ml depth. It is also
necessary to insert that sounding on the axe of the stump, which has not been done earlier; for logistical
reasons (because of ADDAX installations).
VII .CONCLUSION :
We preconize deep foundations with beaten posts or drilled posts, with reinforced concrete and with a
big diameter.
The defining of these foundations comes essentially after study of the project (geometry; altimetry) and
of necessary charges:
To illustrate that statement; on the right bank and for posts of 20 ml long, it comes according to the
diameter of the posts.
On the left bank it is advisable to make a complementary sounding at at least 30ml deep.
Our proposals are those that sound to be the best considering the data in our possession.
Other solutions could be proposed, if we take into account criteria that weren`t retained; in a
feasibility study and that could appear on the conception phase or execution (environment
modification, any particular characteristics of the project not brought forward to us).
We would advise that, on the execution phase of the project; the realization of mission G3 (study and
geotechnical forwarding of execution) and G4 (geotechnical supervision of execution); distinctive
and simultaneous.
Therefore; it is important to verify the geotechnical data by sampling during the execution and by a
complementary geotechnical program of investigation; if necessary.
We would also advise for the placement of piezometers so as to better observe the phreatic water
fluctuations.
This report and its appendixes are inseparable its bad use that could occur following a
communication or a partial reproduction, shouldn`t be endorsed by Geri.
The soil reconnaissance is done by punctual soundings; the results are not rigorously extrapolable on
