Homework #1
Due 10/4/2021
1. There are several disciplines related to manufacturing such as material science, mechanical
engineering, industrial engineering, and business/management. Which discipline is most
likely interested in (1) development of advanced manufacturing equipment, (2) inventory
control and production scheduling, and (3) enterprise accounting, respectively?
(1) mechanical engineering
(2) industrial engineering
(3) management and business
2. In a part design, a dimension normally comes with a tolerance. What is the main purpose
of specifying a tolerance from the manufacturing aspect? Please explain your reason.
Due to the limitation and random factors during manufacturing, it’s impossible to
make a product perfect with no error. Therefore, the purpose of tolerance is to define
the acceptable error range in order to ensure the finished product satisfying its design
requirement. It thus allows easy implementation of quality control in manufacturing
environment. Besides, setting up an acceptable tolerance is also an effective method to
decrease the manufacturing cost.
3. Please give an example to explain why design and manufacturing need to be conducted
simultaneously rather than sequentially.
Assume the available thickness of a standard stock material are 4.0, 7.0, and 10.0, and
any thickness between 6.5 and 7.5 is an acceptable design. If design and manufacturing
are not conducted simultaneously, the designer may choose the thickness as 6.5 or 7.5
rather than 7.0. Extra material has to be removed from the stock in this case, unnecessarily
increasing the total manufacturing cost and time.
5. A product life cycle (PLC) contains multiple stages and various activities in each stage.
Manufacturing is only one of them. Please determine the main stage(s) in which the core
competences of the following companies are: (1) ACER (宏碁), (2) TSMC, and (3) UPS or
DHL.
(1) ACER: primary: marketing (secondary: design)
(2) TSMC: manufacturing
(3) UPS / DHL: distribution
