FWD ANALYSIS REPORT

JAIPUR TO REENGUS ROAD


1) PAVEMENT CONDITION AND FIELD INVESTIGATION
1.1 Introduction
This Report contains analysis and overlay design report of project road for pavement
assessment for stretch Jaipur to Reengus Road using Falling Weight Deflectometer.

2) PROJECT SCOPE AND CONCLUSIONS


Scope of the Project is to evaluate the existing pavement using Falling Weight Deflectometer
and conclude following objectives:
• Elastic modulus of each layer of the pavement from top to bottom i.e., bituminous layer,
granular layer and Sub-grade respectively for the sampled length.
• The Residual life of an existing pavement.
• Required overlay thickness for design traffic.

3) PAVEMENT EVALUATION & DATA COLLECTION METHODOLOGY


To assess the Pavement following investigation are needed for carrying out the pavement
evaluation:
• Pavement crust details
• Deflection measurements using FWD
• Calculation of modulus values using KGPBACK software
• Calculation of remaining life using IITPAVE software
• Overlay design

3.1 Pavement Crust Details


The historical data on pavement crust, rehabilitation measures, pavement maintenance
history, traffic etc. are useful in identifying the reasons for different modes of distress and in
establishing whether the distresses were caused by deficiency in design, poor material
selection, improper construction or other reasons such as high-water table and poor drainage
etc.
If it is not available, Traffic surveys, Pavement condition survey and test Pits are carried out
to assess present condition and distresses of Pavement.

3.2 Deflection Measurements using Falling Weight Deflectometer


Deflection survey was carried out using Falling weight Deflectometer Equipment. By applying
Target peak load applied on bituminous pavements as 40 kN (+/- 4 kN) which corresponds to
the load on one dual wheel set of 80 kN standard axle load. Deflections are measured along
the lane at a specific distance from the edge according to the IRC: 115 -2014 guidelines.

3.3 Calculation of Modulus Values Using KGPBACK Software
KGPBACK is a specific version of BACKGA program, which was developed for the research
scheme R-81 (2003) of the Ministry of Road Transport and highways. It is a genetic based
model for back calculation of layer moduli. In the calculation process, various data inputs such
as normalized deflections to a standard load of 40 KN. Radial distances at which deflections
are measured, layer thicknesses, Poisson's ratio values of different layers, applied peak load
and Tyre pressure are used to back calculate the elastic moduli of different layers of the
existing pavement. The back calculated moduli are used for the analysis of the in-service
pavement and for assessment of the structural condition of the pavement.

3.4 Calculation of remaining life using IITPAVE Software


Modulus values obtained through KGPBACK and crust thickness details were used to
calculate remaining life of each section through IITPAVE software to assess the need of
rehabilitation over the existing pavement in the form of overlay.

3.5 Overlay Design


If remaining fatigue life obtained through IITPAVE is less than the required design traffic, in
that case an overlay is required which is done by applying a new bituminous layer over the
existing pavement so that remaining fatigue life is obtained equal or greater than required
MSA.

4) PRINCIPAL AND FUNCTION OF FALLING WEIGHT DEFLECTOMETER


Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is a fully automatic impulse-loading device in which a
transient load is applied to the pavement and the deflected shape of the pavement surface is
measured. The working principle of a typical FWD with 7 geo-phones is illustrated below in
Figure-1. The test was carried out using 300mm diameter plate and 40KN (+/-4KN) load. The
distance measuring unit of the FWD is GPS integrated. The geo-phone is placed at 0, 300mm,
450mm, 600mm, 900mm,1200mm and 1500mm distance from the Centre of the plate.

Impulse load is applied vertically by means of a falling mass on a system of springs placed
over a circular loading plate thrice, the first fall is taken as the seating load. The deflection is
measured using displacement sensors. A trailer mounted FWD, towed by vehicle and is used
for the deflection measurements. A mass of weight dropped from a pre-determined height,
onto a series of springs/buffers placed on top of a loading plate, provides peak load and the
result at peak vertical surface deflection at different radial locations are measured and
recorded.

5) PAVEMENT DEFLECTION SURVEY EQUIPMENT DETAILS


5.1 Specifications of Equipment
The equipment is fully automated and can be controlled using a laptop sitting ahead in vehicle
from where command is initiated. Test on pavement is completed by hammering consecutive
loads on pavement surface.

6) EVALUATION OF EXISTING PAVEMENT USING FALLING WEIGHT
DEFLECTOMETER

6.1 Pavement Composition (Crust Composition)

6.2 Falling Weight Deflectometer survey procedure


In pavement deflection, survey following procedure is adopted:
a) The Test point locations were pre-identified, wherein the points were calculated for project
section, which were divided into sub-sections based on the visual pavement condition
survey data & test pit data.
b) Test was not executed at approaches to existing structures and at locations where the
bituminous surface had stripped off and granular layers were visible.
c) Testing procedure was adopted as per IRC: 115-2014.
d) The command is stimulated through the laptop which raises the mass to a pre-determined
height and provides an impact on the pavement and produces a target load of 40kN (+/-
4kN). This impact produces deflection, which is automatically recorded in the system.
Following procedure is repeated if suitable data is obtained.
e) For temperature correction factor of bituminous layer, pavement temperature is required
therefore after every hour pavement temperature is measured.

6.3 Back Calculation of Layer Moduli (KGPBACK)


After completing the field investigating and test, data acquired through Deflection survey is
normalized to 40 kN. Using normalized Data, other required parameters as given in Table 3
are used in KGPBACK software, and pavement layer modulus is obtained.

6.4 Applicable Correction Factors


The back calculated moduli of the bituminous & granular layers obtained from software
analysis were applied with following correction factors:

6.5 Pavement Temperature Correction Factor


The pavement temperature influences back-calculated moduli values of the bituminous layers
evaluated by FWD survey. Hence, the back-calculated moduli obtained at Temperatures other
than the identified standard temperature needs to be corrected. For areas in India having a
tropical climate, the standard pavement temperature recommended as 35°C. Since for the
Project Road pavement temperatures at the time of deflection measurements lies between
30.6°C & 42.57°C appropriate temperature corrections are applied.
The pavement temperature influences back-calculated moduli values of the bituminous layers
evaluated by FWD survey. Hence, the back-calculated moduli obtained at temperatures other
than the identified standard temperature is corrected.
The back-calculated modulus of bituminous layer obtained from deflection survey conducted
at a temperature “T2” °C shall be corrected to estimate the modulus corresponding to a
temperature of “T1” °C using below given equation:

6.6 Homogeneous section


The “normalized deflection data” was then used for determining deflections, deflection bowl
and finally in framing of homogeneous sections and homogeneous sections are as follows:

6.7 Correction for Seasonal Variation
Moisture content affects the strength of subgrade and granular sub-base / base layers. The
extent to which the strength is affected depends on the nature of subgrade soil, gradation and
nature of fines in the granular layers, etc. For applying these guidelines, it is intended that the
pavement layer moduli values should pertain to the period when the subgrade is at its weakest
condition. In India, this period occurs during the recession of monsoon. It is, therefore,
desirable to conduct deflection measurements during this period. Where the same is not
feasible, a correction procedure is applied. Following equations are used for seasonal
corrections:

In the present study, the corrections are applied with respect to winter season. The
moduli thus obtained from KGPBACK Software are further corrected and further 15th
percentile of modulus values is considered for each sub-section. The corrected
modulus values are given in Table 4 below.

7) REMANING LIFE AND OVERLAY DESIGN


The structural condition of the pavement can be evaluated by assessment of remaining life
which is obtained by estimating the traffic loads that the pavement was initially designed for
and subtracting from them the traffic loads that have already been carried by the pavement.
The remaining life is calculated using IITPAVE software using following input parameters as
given in Table 5.

7.1 Performance Models


To analyses pavement performance in terms of rutting and fatigue cracking, following
performance models as per IRC: 115-2014 were adopted.

7.1.1 Fatigue in bituminous layer


The allowable tensile strains are calculated using the fatigue criteria as mentioned in Clause
6.2.2 of IRC: 37-2012. Fatigue model for 90 per cent reliability is as given below:

7.1.2 Rutting in subgrade
The allowable vertical compressive strains were calculated using the rutting criteria as
mentioned in Clause 6.3 of IRC: 37-2012. Rutting model for 90 per cent reliability is, as shown
below:

7.2 Remaining life of Pavement


The remaining life of pavement in terms of fatigue life and rutting life using the performance
models are tabulated in Table 6.

The minimum of the Fatigue life and Rut life is remaining life of the pavement. Remaining life
of the pavement is tabulated in the Table 6 above.

8) OVERLAY DESIGN CALCULATION


Overlay is calculated using IITPAVE software as per the fatigue and rutting life criteria. The
overlay proposed with New Bituminous layer over the existing bituminous layer.

8.1 Performance Models


To analyse pavement performance in terms of rutting and fatigue cracking, following
performance models as per IRC: 115-2014 were adopted as in section 7.1 above.

8.2 Design life of Pavement


The remaining life of pavement in terms of fatigue life and rutting life using the above
performance models are tabulated in Table 7.

Note:-
• From Ch. 282+250 to Ch. 286+000 (LHS), as per FWD test required thickness is
75 mm (i.e., BC=25, DBM=50) but as MoRT&H minimum thickness of BC layers is
30. So, recommended thickness is 80 mm (i.e., BC=30, DBM=50).
• From Ch. 296+5000 to Ch. 298+075 (RHS), as per FWD test required thickness is
45 mm (i.e., BC=45) but as MoRT&H thickness of BC layers is 30/40/50. So,
recommended thickness is 50 mm (i.e., BC=50).

The required MSA for the pavement section of LHS & RHS side is 97.83 MSA. Hence,
same is considered in design of overlay for the section of road.
