Aim: To get salt and sand from sea water.

Apparatus/Materials:

• Filter paper • Filter paper

• Sand • Beaker
• Salt/cobalt chloride crystals • Bunsen burner
• Water • Stirring rod
• Conical flask • Evaporating basin
• Filter funnel

Method:

1. Mix some sand and coarse salt/cobalt chloride with water and put it on the Bunsen burner.
2. Mix well until the salt is completely dissolved.
3. Filter the mixture through a filter funnel.
4. Put some of the mixture in an evaporating basin

3. Which is the residue and which is the filtrate?
4. What happened to the water in the evaportaing basin? Where did it go?
5. What was the substance left behind in the evaporation dish?
6. What process can you use to get the evaporated water back?
