Purpose: The O-Gaddy Drill is designed to develop teamwork, leadership, outdoor survival skills, and
problem-solving abilities among Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. This activity aims to promote
collaboration, critical thinking, and adaptability in challenging outdoor environments.
Preparation:
Selection of Teams: Organize scouts into balanced teams, ensuring diversity in skill sets and experience
levels.
Training: Provide basic training in outdoor survival skills, first aid, knot tying, navigation, and
teamwork principles before conducting the drill.
Equipment Check: Ensure each team has necessary equipment such as compasses, maps, first aid kits,
ropes, and any specific gear relevant to the drill.
Execution:
Briefing: Conduct a comprehensive briefing explaining the objectives, rules, safety measures, and
expectations of the drill.
Scenario: Create a realistic scenario (e.g., lost in the woods, survival challenge) for teams to navigate
and solve within a designated area.
Time Limit: Set a reasonable time limit for completion, encouraging teams to strategize and manage time
effectively.
Monitoring: Have designated leaders or instructors monitor the drill to ensure safety and adherence to
guidelines.
Debriefing: Gather all participants after the drill to discuss experiences, challenges faced, successful
strategies, and areas for improvement.
Guidelines:
Safety First: Emphasize safety measures throughout the activity. Teams must prioritize safety over
completion speed.
Teamwork: Encourage cooperation and effective communication within teams. Success depends on
collective efforts.
Problem Solving: Encourage scouts to think creatively and use available resources to solve challenges.
Adaptability: The scenario might change; teams should be adaptable and flexible in their approach.
Respect: Foster an environment of mutual respect among participants, regardless of differing opinions or
ideas.
Leadership Rotation: Encourage rotation of leadership roles within teams to promote leadership
development among all scouts.
Leave No Trace: Emphasize the importance of environmental stewardship and leaving the area as they
found it.
Evaluation:
Performance Assessment: Evaluate teams based on their problem-solving skills, teamwork, leadership,
and adherence to safety protocols.
Feedback: Provide constructive feedback to each team, highlighting strengths and areas for
improvement.
Conclusion:
Conclude the O-Gaddy Drill with positive reinforcement, acknowledging individual and team efforts.
Encourage scouts to apply the skills learned in their scouting journey and daily lives
