DISCUSSION

A. Understanding Conjunction
Conjunction it’s a conjunction that connects parts of speech in a sentence: word
with word, phrase with phrase, or clause with clause which has an equal or similar
position. These equivalent words can be noun with noun, adverb with adverb, adjective
with adjective, verb with verb, phrase with phrase, and clause with clause. For example:
1. We could go to library, or we could go to the park.
2. He neither finished his homework nor studied for the test.
3. I went out because the sun was shining.

Three kinds of conjunction:

1. Single Word, for example: and, because, but, or.
2. Compound, for example: as long as, in order that.
3. Correlative, for example: so…..that, both…..and, neither…..nor.

Understanding the use of conjunction and the relationship between clauses is important
for recognizing each part in a complete sentence.

B. USE OF CONJUNCTION
Conjunction are words used to join words, phrases, and clauses together for
contructing sentences. Examples of conjunction:

 Words
Rina and Rani are watching TV.
 Phrase
The man is not only a famous writer but also a good human being.
 Clause
I watched TV when he called me.

There are 3 types of conjunction: coordinating conjunction, correlative

conjunction, and subordinating conjunction.

1
1. TYPES OF CONJUNCTION
 Coordinating Conjunction: Is a conjunction that connects words, phrases or
clauses that are the same or grammatically the equivalent. For examples: For,
And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, and So. (FANBOYS)
a. She is cute but evil
b. Do you want to go with me or stay home?
c. My dad was very tired, so he went to bed earlier.

Note: Use a comma before the conjunction if the conjunction combines 2

sentences. Commas are also used if the conjunction combines more than 2 words
or phrase.

 Correlative Conjunction: Conjunctions are used in pairs in sentence to show a

relationship or comparison between two words, phrases or clauses that are
grammatically parallel or second in nature. For examples: not only__ but also,
either__ or, neither__ nor, both__ and, not__ but, whether__ or.
a. Both my sister and my brother can play the guitar.
b. He is not only handsome but also smart.

 Subordinating Conjunction: subordinating conjunction are words that can be

used to make adverbial clause from main clause. The number of conjunction of
this type is very large and most of them are adverb. This type can be grouped in
to 5: namely conjunction which state the time, cause and effect, opposition,
purpose, conditional. For example: after, before, when ever, as, so…that.
a. We will play football after we finished college.
b. When ever I look at her picture, my heart beats fast.
c. The coffee is so hot that I can’t drink it.
