1. Reliance’s Website
Reliance’s History-
Reliance Industries Ltd. started as a small textile manufacturing unit in Mumbai, and over the years,
it has grown to become one of the largest companies in India. In the early years, RIL focused on the
textile industry and quickly became one of the leading players in the market. In the 1970s, the
company diversified into petrochemicals and refining, and by the 1980s, it had become one of the
largest petrochemical companies in the world. In 1986, RIL became a public company, and the
following year, it issued its first Initial Public Offering (IPO). This move helped RIL to raise capital and
expand its operations. In the 1990s, RIL continued diversifying its operations, expanding into
telecommunications, power, and financial services. In 2002, RIL merged with Indian Petrochemicals
Corporation Limited (IPCL), which helped the company to expand its petrochemical and refining
operations further. In 2005, RIL entered the retail sector, launching its first retail store in Mumbai.
Since then, the company has expanded its retail operations to grocery stores, hypermarkets, and
online retail.

In recent years, RIL has continued to expand its operations and become one of India's largest
companies. In 2016, the company launched its telecom service, Jio, which quickly became one of the
largest telecom companies in India. RIL has also made significant investments in renewable energy,
digital services, and healthcare.
Today, RIL is a global company with operations in over 100 countries. It is one of the largest
companies in India and is recognized as a leader in many sectors in which it operates.

Our motto “Growth is Life” aptly captures the ever-evolving spirit of Reliance. We have evolved from
being a textiles and polyester company to an integrated player across energy, materials, retail,
entertainment and digital services. In each of these areas, we are committed to innovation-led,
exponential growth. Our vision has pushed us to achieve global leadership in many of our
businesses. Reliance’s products and services portfolio touches almost all Indians on a daily basis,
across economic and social spectrums. We are now focused on building platforms that will herald

Reliance Retail to focus on rural prosperity
Reliance Retail Limited (RRL), the retailing arm of the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, went
rural in 2018, that brings in prosperity to the underprivileged rural populace of India. Mukesh
Ambani, chairman and managing director, RIL, said, “Bringing in prosperity and well-being,
particularly to farmers and thereby triggering a socio-economic transformation, particularly in rural
India, remains our prime motive.”

As part of its plans, Reliance Retail has created rural business hubs, which will be centers of
aggregation of farm produce. “The hubs will ensure supply of quality farm inputs and provisions of
products and services to rural customers and in the process, will help the farmers get a good deal for
their produce,” informed Ambani.

Besides, the company is also focussed on generating significant employment opportunities,

particularly for the underprivileged. As part of plans, RRL plans to create half a million jobs directly
over the next five years. According to Ambani, the rippling effect of the company’s retail initiative
will create multiples of indirect jobs as well. RRL currently employs over 25,000 people on its own,
and combined with other subsidiaries, the group employs more than 48,000 people.

More openings and partnerships:

With investments close to Rs 25,000 crore over the next five years, RRL planned to roll out retail
stores across all verticals in the country. So far, the company has invested close to Rs 5,000 crore in
the retail venture to open around 700 stores across 14 different formats in 60 cities of the country.
According to Ambani, Reliance Fresh, the oldest format from RRL, has around 600 stores across the
country.

Besides stores, the company has also identified growth opportunities in various formats and plans to
introduce new retail verticals in India. Speaking on this, Ambani said, “Based on our experience over
the past twelve months, we have organized our retail initiative to focus on product market formats.
This has enabled us to effectively address the retail market opportunity in several ways.”

According to Ambani, growing through partnerships is one of the key strategic shifts in RRL, and the
company has plans of partnering with more foreign giants in the coming years. Over the last 12
months, Reliance Retail has formed partnerships with leading overseas players including Marks and
Spencer, Pearle Europe, Apple, and Vornado.

More loyal consumers:

According to Ambani, all these initiatives are in sync with the company’s plans to gain more satisfied
and loyal consumers. “Today, we are endowed with the confidence of nearly 3.5 million loyal
customers through our various retailing formats, and we intend to be the most trusted brand across
all verticals of retail sector in India. Moreover, campaigns such as the ‘Reliance One membership
program’ have helped us keep track of our loyal consumers and we plan to generate more such
strategies to establish good relationships with consumers,

Reliance Foundation
Since 2010, Reliance Foundation has been empowering marginalized rural communities in India with
innovative and sustainable solutions. Through its Rural Transformation program, the foundation
collaborates with various stakeholders, reaching out to over 14.6 million people across 20 states and
two Union Territories.

The program comprises two core initiatives: Bharat India Jodo (BIJ) and Reliance Foundation
Information Services (RFIS). BIJ focuses on empowering communities to achieve sustainable
livelihoods, while RFIS leverages digital platforms to provide rural communities with advisories on
weather, farming, fishing, and more.

Reliance Foundation adopts a comprehensive approach to support rural communities, addressing

key areas such as women empowerment, nutrition security, climate resilience, water and ecological
security, rural livelihood security, and strengthening community structures.

Additionally, the foundation actively works on creating water secure communities, promoting
nutrition security through the Reliance Nutrition Garden model, strengthening rural governance and
leadership, empowering women entrepreneurs, and facilitating market linkages for farmers through
Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs).

RFIS plays a crucial role by using technology to provide valuable information to livelihood
practitioners, such as farmers, fishers, and livestock farmers, through various digital channels and
advisory platforms.

The foundation's efforts have resulted in positive social change, with strengthened community
structures, increased women participation in the rural economy, and improved livelihoods for rural
communities. Additionally, RFIS's advisory services have been instrumental in making fishing safer,
sustainable, and more profitable for marine fisher folks along India's coastline.

Airtel Makes Inroads into Rural Markets, Challenging Reliance Jio’s Dominance
In the fiercely competitive telecom market, Bharti Airtel is making remarkable strides in narrowing
the gap with its formidable rival, Reliance Jio. What sets Airtel apart is its concerted efforts to tap
into rural areas, where it has witnessed a notable increase in revenue market share across 13 out of
14 B and C circles during FY23. In contrast, Reliance Jio has managed to expand its market share in a
mere three circles, according to industry analysts.

The B and C circles comprise significant markets such as Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh
(West), Uttar Pradesh (East), Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Assam, North East, Bihar, and
more. While Reliance Jio has successfully established its dominance in non-metro and lower-tier
circles, Airtel's growing revenue market share in these regions highlights the company's focused
approach to capturing subscribers in rural landscapes.

Airtel's rural conquests have been driven by its ability to cater to the unique demands and
aspirations of customers in these areas. By offering tailored services and connectivity solutions that
resonate with rural populations, Airtel has managed to gain an edge. This has proven to be a game-
changer as it has successfully attracted subscribers who were previously underserved or overlooked.

While both Airtel and Reliance Jio have witnessed revenue growth across all circles, the latter's
market share gains have been relatively limited, primarily concentrated in Kerala, Punjab, and
Jammu & Kashmir within the B and C circles category. In contrast, Airtel has encountered a marginal
loss in market share solely in Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming its stronghold in the majority of rural
markets.

The significance of Airtel's focus on B and C circles becomes evident when considering that these
regions contribute a substantial 51% of the company's total adjusted gross revenues (AGR),
amounting to a staggering Rs 71,825 crore. In comparison, these circles account for 57% of Reliance
Jio's total AGR, which stands at Rs 89,280 crore.

FY23 has proven to be a promising year for Bharti Airtel as it has witnessed an overall increase in
revenue market share, surging from 35% to an impressive 36.2%. Reliance Jio, while still maintaining
its dominant position, experienced a relatively modest rise, reaching 41% market share.

Billionaire Ambani's Reliance Jio renews rural India push with $12 4G phone
July 3 (Reuters) - Reliance Jio said on Monday it would launch a 4G feature phone priced at 999
rupees ($12.19), the latest attempt by billionaire Mukesh Ambani's telecom arm to grab market
share in India's massive and under-penetrated hinterlands.

Jio, which famously disrupted the Indian telecom sector in the last decade by introducing cut-price
tariffs, will roll out entry-level phones equipped with internet services like digital payment in its push
to reach those who have not yet migrated to smartphones.

"There are still 250 million mobile phone users in India who remain 'trapped' in the 2G era, ... at a
time when the world stands at the cusp of a 5G revolution," Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio,
said in a statement.
The move could also help Jio cement its leadership in telecom user base which has already crossed
439 million, far ahead of rivals Vodafone Idea (VODA.NS) and Bharti Airtel (BRTI.NS).

Following the tariff disruption in 2016, Jio had in 2021 launched the 4G JioPhone smartphone at
6,499 rupees, which after an initial sales surge is finding limited takers even after a price cut, a
market study by IIFL Securities showed in May. Currently, 4G feature phones account for less than
1% of the feature phone sales in India, per Counterpoint Research. “Feature phone to smartphone
transition has slowed down due to high learning curve for a lot of rural Indian users and Jio Bharat
aims to bridge that gap," said Tarun Pathak, analyst at Counterpoint Research. Feature phones are
models that have higher functionalities than basic devices but falls short of the capabilities of a
smartphone. "4G is still a significant opportunity in India considering the 5G devices remain elusive
from the sub-10,000 rupee segment and will also help Jio in giving consumers a taste if its services
ecosystem," Pathak added. The beta trial for the first 1 million so-called JioBharat phones will begin
on July 7 and will take place across 6,500 tehsils or sub-districts in India, the company said.

nearly 24.05% of its subscribers stemming from rural areas in India. In an earlier yearly
performance report by TRAI, the data showed Jio’s total rural subscribers was only 41.2 lakh;

7. Jio 2.0?: Will Reliance’s Aggressive Foray Into FMCG Be Enough To Disrupt The Sector? -
India’s FMCG market is expected to increase at a CAGR of 14.9 per cent to touch $220 billion
by 2025 from $110 billion in 2020. RIL plans to enter the food, home care and personal care
categories in the FMCG space. Tier-II and Tier-III cities would become the main playground
for the company. As per experts, the favourable route for RIL would be through mergers and
acquisitions (M&As) of regional brands. Its own brands, which are sold at its supermarkets
and hypermarkets, would be going to general trade. Reliance Retail Ventures had taken the
acquisition route even in its lifestyle offerings. The company has over 60 brands, majority of
which are international. It has a retail footprint of 595 stores and 744 shop-in-shops in India.
Its portfolio includes Jimmy Choo, Michael Kors, Superdry, Scotch & Soda, Steve Madden,
Hamleys and Burberry, among others. Iconix Lifestyle India, a joint venture between
American Iconix Brand Group and Reliance Brands, acquired the IP rights of British brand Lee
Cooper for India last year.
