CH-1 BIOLOGY
Characteristics and classification of living
Organism: living thing
Growth: permanent increase in size
Movement: action by an organism
Sensitivity: when organism feels change in environment
Excretion: removal of liquid waste (urine)
Egestion: removal of solid waste (faeces)
Reproduction: the process to produce of the same kind/
species
Nutrition: the way of eating by an organism
Respiration: process of releasing Energy from absorbed
food by using oxygen
Metabolism: the chemical reactions that happen in the
living organism
Dry Mass: the mass of the organism after it has been
killed and all the water has been removed from it
Common ancestors: species that lived in the past and has
given birth to 7 different species
Species: a group of living organisms that can produce
infertile offspring
Infertile: not able to reproduce
Fertile: able to reproduce

CH-1 BIOLOGY
Binomial system: System that has been agreed
internationally the scientific name is divided into two
parts containing the species and the genus
Genus: a group of species that share similar features and
Dichotomous key: way of identifying an organism
Characteristic features of animals
* their cells have a nucleus but no cell wall or chloroplast
* They feed on organic substances
Characteristic features of plants:-
*Their cells have a nucleus and cell walls made of
cellulose and often contain chloroplast
*they feed my photosynthesis
*They have organs(roots, stems and leaves but some
don't have these organs)
Kingdom: one of the major groups that all organisms are
classified in
Organic substances: substances whose molecules contain
carbon
Chlorophyll: Green pigment that absorbs energy from
light to make food by photosynthesis
Cellulose: a carbohydrate that forms long fibre and
makes up the cell wall of plants
DATE:9/11/23
CH-1 BIOLOGY
Characteristic feature of fungi:-
*They are usually multicellular but some of them are
unicellular
* they have nuclei and cell walls, but the wall is not
made of cellulose
* They don't have chlorophyll
* They feed by digesting waste organic material
Decomposers: organisms that breakdown organic
substances outside their bodies
Spores: very is small groups of sales surrounded by a
protective wall, use in reproduction
Multicellular: made of many cells
Unicellular: made of a single cell
Characteristic features of protoctists:-
* they are multicellular or unicellular
* Their cells have a nucleus and may or may not have a
cell wall and chloroplast
* Some feed by photosynthesis and other feed on organic
substances
Characteristic features of prokaryotes:-
* they are usually unicellular
* They have no nucleus
* They have cell well, not made of cellulose
DATE:9/11/23
CH-1 BIOLOGY
* They have no mitochondria
* They have a circular loop of DNA, which is free in the
cytoplasm
* They often have plasmids
Vertebrates
*Vertebrates are animals that have backbones
* vertebrates or fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and
mammals
Characteristic features of fish:-
*They are vertebrates with scaly skin
* they have gills throughout their life
* They have fins
* Their eggs have no shell and are laid in water
Amphibians
The Larvae are called tadpoles and they spend the first
part of their life in water they then undergo a major
change in the shape of their body called metamorphosis
as they become an adult
Characteristic features of amphibians:-
* they are vertebrates with skin with no scales
* Their eggs have no shell and are laid in water
* The tadpoles live in water but adults often live on land
DATE:9/11/23
CH-1 BIOLOGY
* The tadpoles have gills for gas exchange but adults
have lungs
Metamorphosis: changing from a larva with one body
form to an adult with a different body form.
Reptiles
Characteristic features of reptiles
Crustaceans
Characteristics :-
* They are arthropods with more than four pairs of
jointed legs
* They have two pairs of antennae
Aquatic:living in water
Arachnids
Characteristics:-
*They are arthropods with four pairs of jointed legs
*They have no antennae
*Their body is divided into two parts (cephalothorax and
abdomen)
Myriapods
Characteristics:-
*Their body consists of many similar segments
*Each of their body segments have jointed legs
*They have one pair of antennae

Ferns
Characteristics features of ferns:-
*They are plants with roots, stems and leaves(fronds)
* They do not produce flowers
* They reproduce by spores
Flowering plants
Monocots Dicots
