1
OBJECTIVES

This seminar has been proposed by the students to obtain the following goals:
● Investigate and determine the latest trends, threats and impacts in
cyberspace;
● Improve skills and expertise in using mobile devices and cybersecurity
through security awareness training;
● Install a proper sense of ownership over cybersecurity and encourage
participants to take proper responsibility and behaviour for safeguarding
data and information;
● Provide a secure and private environment in cyberspace and empower
participants to recognize and respond to possible cyber threats; and
● Develop a comprehensive understanding and knowledge in identifying the
specific risks and promote a continuous education for the participants.

DESCRIPTION

According to the latest cybercrime statistics 2023, global cyber security in

cyberspace is always increasing throughout these years. During the pandemic,
cyber criminals took advantage of the misaligned networks as businesses moved
to remote work environments. In 2020, malware attacks increased to 358%
compared to 2019. From here, cyber-attacks globally increased by 125% in the
year 2021 and increasing volumes of cyber-attacks continued to threaten
businesses and individuals in 2022 (Griffiths, 2023). The implication of having
cybersecurity awareness will help users understand the threats, learn and apply
the appropriate security measures to prevent cyber threats (Martin, 2014)
and cybercrime for their security and safety measures. Cited at the research
article entitled “A Cybersecurity Awareness among Senior High School Students:
A Descriptive Analysis”, education institutions are facing high risks of losing
valuable intellectual properties and their research data such as patents
awarded to the professors and students, and also the personal information
about the students, staff, and faculty. Due to the high level of hacking attacks

2
on the institutions of higher education, the need for cyber security must also be
increased. As the level of hacking attacks increases, the level of defense such as
using antivirus or anything else must also be increased to prevent hacking.

Therefore, the proposal seminar will focus on the cybersecurity awareness

that will promote and help our audience to be aware of the latest security threats
that they may encounter through time, such as the dangers of clicking on a
malicious link or downloading an infected attachment, interacting online,
disclosing sensitive information and so on. Another study pointed out that it was
recommended to conduct training and awareness campaigns after finding
vulnerabilities in industrial control systems due to users’ unsecured passwords,
management, unapplied software patches, and outdated or uninstalled antivirus
and malware protection (Pretorius & Van Niekerk, 2015).

TARGET

The target audience of the proposal are the people who are inclined or
using the internet without knowing the risks that are present in cyberspace.
Teenagers, including Junior and Senior High School students, are some of the
most active internet users, and their online activities have become a part of their
daily lives and necessities. Global cyber security in cyberspace is always
increasing throughout these years. According to the research article entitled “A
Cybersecurity Awareness among Senior High School Students: A Descriptive
Analysis”, it was reported as of January 2020, that the number of internet users
in the Philippines continually grew up to 73 million people or more than half of
the total population which mostly belong to the age group of 16 years old and
above (Sanchez; Statistica, 2020). Given this matter, this seminar aims to spread
awareness to the randomly selected students in Senior High School at National
University, Lipa who experienced cyber-attacks (such as stolen identity, phishing,
scams, etc.) Spreading awareness onto the students will gradually decrease the
level of cyber-attacks each year and the level of victims that suffer financial, legal,
and psychological consequences will also gradually decrease.

3

5
AGENDA

The proposal paper entitled “Defending My Data, Protecting My Security:

Strategies Emerging Cybersecurity Threats” promotes safe online behaviour
among the participants and proposes enhancements and possible interventions
that will help them develop social awareness as to the effectiveness of cyber
security along with all the participants including the researchers, teachers, and
the selected SHS students at NU Lipa. This proposal represents a
comprehensive agenda to address these challenges head-on, outlining a
strategic approach to enhance our cybersecurity defenses, mitigate risks, and
ensure the resilience of our digital infrastructure. The seminar is scheduled to
commence at 7 am and will conclude at 12 pm. The first segment of the event,
from 7 am to 9 am, will include several key activities. It will begin with an assembly
and registration process, followed by an opening prayer and the singing of the
national anthem. Afterward, there will be the delivery of opening remarks, the
introduction of the esteemed guest speaker, and the guest speaker's
presentation. Following the presentation, there will be a dedicated session for
questions and answers or an open forum, providing participants with an
opportunity for engagement and clarification.

Around 9:30 am, there will be a short break of approximately 30 minutes,

allowing attendees to refresh and recharge. From 10:00 am to 11:50 am, the
guest speaker's presentation will resume, accompanied by the sharing of
experiences by participants. Additionally, a token of appreciation will be extended
to the guest speaker in recognition of their valuable contribution to the seminar.

The concluding phase, set to commence at 11:50 am, will be led by Ms.
Jhen Mhaclyn K. Latayan, who will deliver the closing remarks. The entire
program will be efficiently wrapped up at precisely 12 pm, ensuring that the
seminar adheres to the established schedule.

6
LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the seminar focused on cybersecurity,

students will be able to:
● Develop mitigation strategies and best practices for staying updated on
the latest cyber security trends and threats including reliable sources of
information.
● Demonstrate proper use and proficiency in securing and maintaining
privacy in mobile devices (e.g., tablets and smartphones) to protect
against possible threats such as hacking and unauthorized access.
● Exhibit personal responsibilities for cybersecurity by actively engaging in
discussion and sharing knowledge for safe cyberspace.
● Establish and maintain a secure and private online presence in
cyberspace and implement security measures including encryption and
authentication passwords.
● Analyse and identify cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities. The learners
are also expected to foster a continuous education about cybersecurity.
