Form the greatestgiven
4-digit4 number
or 5 digits
with the digits, 1, 9, 8, 3. Every digit
can only be used once.

3 First, let’s recall what a 4-digit number is. Here are three examples of
4-digit numbers.
4 Do you know which number is the greatest? Let's investigate!

5 It seems like two thousand, nine hundred and eighty-five has the
greatest digit 9 in the hundreds place.
6 Is it the greatest?
7 That's right! It is not! When comparing numbers, we start comparing
the digits in the greatest place value first...
8 which is the thousands place.
9 Since the digit 7 is the greatest compared to digits 2 and 4...

10 7185 is the greatest number!

11 The digit 7 gives us a value of seven thousands, which is greater than
two thousands and four thousands!
12 Awesome! Let’s try to form the greatest 4-digit numbers with these
digits!
13 We need to arrange the digits in the different place values such that we
can get the greatest number.
14 Let’s start by choosing a digit for the thousand place value first.

15 Which digit should we choose? Let's try!

16 How about digit 1?

17 If we use the digit 1, we will have one thousand.
18 Is this the greatest number we can form?
19 Good thinking! It's not! By using either digit, 3, 8 or 9, we can have a
greater number than 1 thousand.
20 So which digit should be in the thousands place?
21 Fantastic! We can use the greatest digit 9!
22 This will give us nine thousands.
23 Since every digit can only be used once, we are left with digits, 1, 8,
and 3.
24 The next greatest place value is the hundreds place. Which digit should
we place there?
25 That’s right! 8! The largest digit compared to 1 and 3.
26 Now, our number looks like this.
27 We are left with the digits 1 and 3. This can give us either 9813.

28 Or 9831.
29 Can you tell which number is greater?
30 Superb! By looking at the digit in the tens place, the digit 3 is greater
than the digit 1.
31 9831 is the greatest number that we can form!
32 What can you notice about the arrangement of the digits?
33 Awesome! The digits are arranged from the greatest to the smallest!

34 Great! Let’s try another question.

35 Form the smallest 5-digit number with the digits, 5, 0, 2, 3, 7. Every
digit can only be used once.

36 Recall that previously we arranged the digits from greatest to smallest

to find the greatest 4-digit number.
37 And we placed the greatest digit, 9, in the greatest place value to form
the greatest number.
38 But now we are trying to form the smallest 5-digit number instead.

39 Should we put the greatest digit in the greatest place value?

40 No, we should not! So what should we do instead?
41 That's right! We should use the smallest digit!
42 It seems like zero is the smallest digit.
43 Can we put zero in the greatest place value?
44 That’s right! We cannot. By putting zero in the ten thousands place,
we will have a 4-digit number instead.
45 Having a 0 in front does not make it a 5-digit number!
46 What should we do instead?
47 Good thinking! We can choose the next smaller number, 2!
48 Perfect! Now, that we have placed 2 in the largest place value...

49 which digit should we place in the thousands place to get the smallest
number?
50 Do we place the largest digit, 7, like previously?
51 No. Remember, we are forming the smallest number!
52 That's right! 0 is the smallest digit among 5, 3 and 7.
53 We can put 0 in the thousands place.
54 Let's do the same and place the digits for the remaining place values...

55 3...
56 5...
57 and 7.
58 What number did we get?
59 We formed the number 20,357!
60 Is this the smallest number we can form? Let’s check!
61 If we swap the digits 7 and 3, we get 20,753.
62 It is greater than the number we have formed!
63 By arranging the digits from the smallest to the greatest with the
exception of zero, we have formed the smallest 5-digit number!

64 Awesome! Ready to try the next question yourself?

65 Form the greatest 4-digit number with the digits, 4, 0, 2, 6. Every digit
can only be used once.

66 It seems like one of the digits is zero. Can you recall what is special
about the digit zero?
67 Pause the video if you need more time to solve the question. Come
back to check your answer after that!
68 Is your greatest 4-digit number 6420?
69 Great work!
70 By arranging the digits from the greatest to the smallest we can form
the greatest 4-digit number!
71 We have learned how to form numbers given 4 or 5 digits!
