CH-15 LIGHT NOTES (PLANE MIRROR)

• Light travels in a straight line

Q1] In which case, the candle flame can be observed. Why

Case 1 Case 2

Candle flame would be seen clearly in case (i) as the
light travels in a straight path.
Q2] Define Reflection of Light.
The change of direction of light by a mirror is called as reflection of light.
Q3] Define Mirror.
A highly polished reflecting surface that can reflect the ray of light into the
same medium is called mirror.
Q4] Define Real Image.
An image that can be obtained on a screen is called a real image.
Q5] Define Virtual Image.
An image that cannot be obtained on a screen is called a virtual image.
Q6] State the characteristics of the image formed by a plane mirror.
(i) The image formed by a plane mirror is an erect and virtual
image.
(ii) The image is all the same size as that of the object.
(iii) The distance of the image from the mirror is equal to the
distance of the object from the mirror.(object distance is equal
to image distance)
Q7] What do we mean by Lateral Inversion?
Lateral means ‘side ways’
Inversion means ‘Reversal’
The apparent left and right reversal of the image formed on the plane
mirror when compared with the object is known as lateral inversion.
T, M, O, I, A, H, U, V, W. X, and Y are the alphabets that does not
undergo lateral reflection
Q8]The letters on the front of an ambulance are written laterally
inverted like ƎƆИA⅃UꓭMA. Why
The letters on the front of an ambulance are written laterally inverted like
ƎƆИA⅃UꓭMA so that the driver of the vehicle moving ahead of the ambulance
reads the word laterally inverted as AMBULANCE, in his mirror, and gives way
to the ambulance first
Q9] State two uses of plane mirror.
a) Plane Mirror.
They are used in optical instruments like Kaleidoscope and
Periscope.
They are used in solar cookers to reflect light.

Q10] Ajay who is 170 cm tall stood at a distance of 2 meters away from a
plane mirror.

a) What is the height of the Ajay’s Image?

Image height is 170cm.
b) What will be the distance between Ajay and his image if he walks a
distance of 1 meter away from the mirror?
Distance between the object and the image is 6m.
c) How much further he has to walk to be only 1 m from his image?
He has to move 1.5m further to get the distance of 1m from the
image.

Spherical mirrors and lens

Q1] Define Concave Mirror and Convex Mirror
1) Concave Mirror: A spherical mirror whose reflecting surface is curved
inward is called a concave mirror.

2) Convex Mirror: A spherical mirror whose reflecting surface is curved

outward is called a convex mirror.
3) Real Image: An image that can be obtained on a screen is called a real
image.
4) Virtual Image: An image that cannot be obtained on a screen is called
a virtual image.
5) Inverted Image: An image that is upside down as compared to the
object.
6) Erect Image: An image that is upright as compared to the object.
7) Lens: Lenses are transparent material .It is made of glass or plastics.
There are two types ; Concave lens and Convex lens.
8) Dispersion of light: The phenomenon of splitting of white light into its
constituent colours on passing through a transparent medium(glass
prism) is called dispersion of light.
Q2] Distinguish between real image and virtual image for a mirror.

Real Image Virtual Image

Real Image can be obtained on the Virtual Image cannot be obtained on
screen. the screen.
Real Images are inverted images Virtual images are erect images.
Q3] Give 2 common uses of curved mirrors
Ans:

a) Concave mirror
1) It is used as a shaving mirror.
2) It is used by dentists to see an enlarged image of the teeth.
3) It is used by doctors to examine eyes, nose, ears and throat.
4) The reflectors of torches and headlights of vehicles are concave in
shape.
b) Convex Mirror
1) It is used as a rear view mirror in vehicles.
2) It is used in super markets and malls to look out for shop lifters.

Q4) Write the properties of images formed by a concave and convex lens.

Concave lens: A concave lens always form erect ,virtual and smaller
image than the object.

Convex lens: A convex lens can form real and inverted image. When
the object is placed very close to the lens, the image formed is virtual
erect and magnified.
Q5) Write the uses of concave and convex lens.
Concave lens: i)used in certain types of telescopes.
ii)used to correct shortsightedness in spectacles.
Convex lens: i)convex lens is used as a magnifying glass
ii) convex lens is used in microscope, telescope etc.
iii) used in spectacles to correct farsightedness.

Q6] Give Reasons

a) Convex mirrors are used in car wings mirror.

Ans: Convex mirrors are used in car wings mirror because it forms
diminished images and can cover a wider area.
b) Concave mirror is used as a dentist mirror.

Ans: Concave mirror is used as a dentist mirror because concave mirror can
form magnified image when the object is kept closer.
c) A shopkeeper wants to fix a mirror which will give a maximum view of
his shop. What type of mirror should he use? Give reason.

Ans: The shopkeeper will use a convex mirror because convex mirror
makes objects appear closer than they are and gives a larger view.
d) Explain why a hairdresser shows you the hair at the back of your head
after the haircut is complete using a mirror.

Ans: Because the reflection of our hair falls onto the mirror at the back
which the hairdresser holds and the reflection got reflected into the mirror
in front of us whose virtual image again gets reflected into our eyes and
we can see the back of our hair.
