1.You were blindfolded and asked to identify the drinks provided in two different
glasses. You could identify drink A as lime juice and B as bitter gourd juice. How
could you do it in spite of being blindfolded?
In the tongue different types of taste buds are present These taste buds help to identify the
various types of tastes such as spicy, salty, sweet or bitter, etc. We can taste the two drinks
and identify the juices.
3. Tongue is a muscular organ present in our mouth. List its functions.
Ans. Tongue mixes saliva with the food during chewing and helps in swallowing food.
We taste food with our tongue. It helps in talking.
4. There are no taste buds for spicy flavor then how is it possible to call certain
foods as spicy.
Ans. The tongue tastes bitter, salty, sweet and sour, not spiciness. However, the
tongue is capable of sensing hot, cold and pain. The spicy "taste" is actually a
combination of a hot and pain sensation.
5. Draw the diagram to show regions of taste on a tongue.

PART B
1.Windpipe runs adjacent to the food pipe. What will happen if food particles enter
the windpipe?
If, by chance, food particles enter the windpipe, we feel choked, get hiccups or
cough.
2. The stomach's inner lining secretes mucus, hydrochloric acid, and digestive
juices. Write their functions.
The mucous protects the inner lining of the stomach from hydrochloric acid
The acid kills many bacteria that enter along with the food and makes the medium
in the stomach acidic. An acidic environment is needed for the digestive juice
having enzyme pepsin to act.
The digestive juice breaks down the proteins into simpler substances.
NMS/BAHRAIN/WORKSHEET BOOKLET/GRADE VII PAGE NO:8
5. Acids are corrosive but hydrochloric acid produced in the stomach is
necessary. Why?
Ans. Acidic medium in stomach triggers the enzymes in digestive juices for
digestion of proteins

PART B
1.Mihir got his gall bladder removed as he was diagnosed with stones in it. After
the surgery, he faced some problems in digestion of certain food items when
consumed in bulk. Can you tell which kind of food items would they be and why?
Ans. The food items would be rich in fats because bile juice of the gall bladder helps
in the digestion of fats. Removal of gall bladder leads to difficulty in digestion of
fatty substances.
2. Name the finger like projections in small intestine. What role do they play in
small intestine?
The thousands of finger-like outgrowths in the inner walls of small intestine are
called villi. Villi increase the surface area for absorption of digested food.
3. Why glucose drip is given to a patient who has just been operated?
Ans. This is because the patient cannot digest the food and glucose being the
simplest form, get easily absorbed and provide necessary energy to patient
4.Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follows it.
Bile juice is stored in a sac called, gall bladder, located near its organ of secretion,
liver. The gall bladder releases the bile juice into the small intestine whenever food
reaches there. Though bile juice is devoid of any digestive enzymes, it is required
for the digestion of fats. The fats cannot be digested easily because they are
insoluble in water and are present as large globules.
Bile juice breaks down big fat droplets into smaller droplets. These are then easily
digested by the enzymes released from the pancreas.
(a) Which organ secretes the bile juice?
Liver
(b) Why is digestion of fats difficult as compared to that of other nutrients?
The reason behind this is insolubility of fat in water. For the digestion of fat, first bile
juice is required to dissolve fat and helps its digestion.
PART A
1.Which of the following is the correct description of assimilation?
a) The process of breaking large food molecules into simpler molecules.
b) The process by which undigested food is ejected out of the body.
c) The process by which the digested food carried by the blood is taken in by the
cells of the body.
d) Process of inter-exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between haemoglobin
and the cells of the body.
2.Read the following two statements carefully and choose the correct options. (i)

b) Statements (i) and (ii) are incorrect but (iii) is correct.
c) All statements are correct.
d) All statements are incorrect.
3. Choose the incorrect statement.
a) Nutrition is a complex process involving ingestion, digestion, absorption,
assimilation and egestion.
b) salivary glands, liver and pancreas are the main digestive glands which secretes
digestive juice.
c) Chocolate, sweets, soft drinks are the major culprits of tooth decay.
d) The removal of faeces through anus is called ingestion.
4. A baby passed watery stool for two days. The doctor suggested oral rehydration
solution (ORS) for the baby. How would the ORS help the baby?
a) It would help in digesting food
b) It would kill the bacteria that caused the infection
c) It would prevent water from moving out of the body
d) It would replace the fluids and minerals lost from the body

a) digest the cellulose b) not digest the cellulose
c) may or may not digest cellulose d) all of these
2.Which is the largest chamber in the stomach of ruminant?
a) Omasum b) Rumen c) Abomasum d) Reticulum
3. Passage - We can easily see cows, buffaloes and other grass- eating animals
chewing continuously even when they are not eating. In fact, such animals quickly
swallow the grass and store it in a part of stomach called rumen. Here the food
1.Given is an image of an internal part of a cow. Identify which part is it? Give
reason
Stomach/ Rumen/ Small intestine
2. Ruminants such as cow and buffalo swallow their food hurriedly then sit restfully
and chew their food. Give reason
Ans. This is done for complete digestion of the food. When the food is swallowed by
ruminants, it is only partially digested. It is then again chewed for its complete
digestion
3. Name the type of carbohydrate that can be digested by ruminants but not by
humans. Give reason also.
Cellulose, Humans cannot digest cellulose because they do not have bacteria
which produce cellulase to digest cellulose.
Worksheet 9
Feeding and Digestion in Amoeba
5.Amoeba uses finger-like projections to capture food particles. The picture shows
the first step of the process
PART B
1. A unicellular animal P having no fixed shape ingests a food particle by forming
temporary finger like projections Q. The food particle is engulfed with a little
surrounding water to form a temporary stomach R inside it. The chemicals S from
surrounding cytoplasm enter R and break down food into small and soluble
molecules by chemical reactions. The digested food is absorbed directly into
cytoplasm by the process T. The undigested food is thrown out of the body by the
rupture of a cell organelle U in a process called V.
a. Name the unicellular animal.
Amoeba
b. What are Q and R and its function?
Q-Pseudopodia R-vacuole
c. Name chemicals S and process T.
S-Digestive juices T-diffusion
d. Name organelle U and process V.
U – Cell membrane, V- Egestion
2. Explain the process of nutrition in Amoeba with the help of a labeled diagram.
Ans. Amoeba feeds on some microscopic organisms. When it senses food, it pushes
out pseudopodia around the food particle and engulfs it. The food becomes trapped
in a food vacuole. Digestive juices are secreted into the food vacuole. They act on
the food and break it down into simpler substances. Gradually the digested food is
absorbed. The absorbed substances are used for growth, maintenance and
multiplication. The undigested residue of the food is expelled outside by the vacuole
