PART B
1. Case study
The food passes through a continuous canal which begins at the buccal cavity and
ends at the anus. The canal can be divided into various compartments: (1) the
buccal cavity, (2) food pipe or oesophagus, (3) stomach, (4) small intestine, (5)
large intestine ending in the rectum and (6) the anus. Is it not a very long path.
These parts together form the alimentary canal (digestive tract). The food
components gradually get digested as food travels through the various
compartments. The inner walls of the stomach and the small intestine, and the
various glands associated with the canal such as salivary glands, the liver and the
pancreas secrete digestive juices. The digestive juices convert complex substances
of food into simpler ones. The digestive tract and the associated glands together
constitute the digestive system.

PART B
1.Mihir got his gall bladder removed as he was diagnosed with stones in it. After
the surgery, he faced some problems in digestion of certain food items when
consumed in bulk. Can you tell which kind of food items would they be and why?
Ans. The food items would be rich in fats because bile juice of the gall bladder helps
in the digestion of fats. Removal of gall bladder leads to difficulty in digestion of
fatty substances.
2. Name the finger like projections in small intestine. What role do they play in
small intestine?
The thousands of finger-like outgrowths in the inner walls of small intestine are
called villi. Villi increase the surface area for absorption of digested food.
3. Why glucose drip is given to a patient who has just been operated?
Ans. This is because the patient cannot digest the food and glucose being the
simplest form, get easily absorbed and provide necessary energy to patient
4.Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follows it.
Bile juice is stored in a sac called, gall bladder, located near its organ of secretion,
liver. The gall bladder releases the bile juice into the small intestine whenever food
reaches there. Though bile juice is devoid of any digestive enzymes, it is required
for the digestion of fats. The fats cannot be digested easily because they are
insoluble in water and are present as large globules.
Bile juice breaks down big fat droplets into smaller droplets. These are then easily
digested by the enzymes released from the pancreas.
(a) Which organ secretes the bile juice?
Liver
(b) Why is digestion of fats difficult as compared to that of other nutrients?

The reason behind this is insolubility of fat in water. For the digestion of fat, first bile
juice is required to dissolve fat and helps its digestion.

(c) How does bile juice help in digestion of fat?

Bile salts break down larger fat globules in food into small droplets of fat.
(d) Where is the digestion of fat completed?
Small intestine
(e) Does bile juice digest fat completely?
No, bile juice does not digest fat completely.
